Regina Pats News Release
Regina, Saskatchewan - Regina Pats (14-10-1-0) faced off with the Prince George Cougars (13-14-0-0) for their only meeting of the season with the Pats taking a 5-2 win over the Cougars.
First Period
Wednesday's contest started with an extended period of free flowing action and at the midway point of the period, the Pats opened the scoring. Pavel Padakin raced ahead with Austin Wagner driving to the goal, Padakin dropped to the trailer Adam Brooks and Brooks fired home his 10th goal of the season. With the action going end to end later in the frame, Sam Steel gathered the puck from the side of the Cougars net, swung around behind the goal and feathered a pass to Morgan Klimchuk. The sniper picked the far side of the net to give the Pats a 2-0 advantage with just over three minutes remaining in the period. The Pats killed the Cougars lone powerplay to lead 2-0 at the break and leading the shots, 10-7.
Second Period
The quick pace continued into the middle frame with the Pats on the attack early. With Dryden Hunt and Patrick D'Amico driving the net, Connor Gay had the room to grab his own rebound and dump his tenth goal of the season behind Tavin Grant seven minutes into the period. The Pats' third goal of the evening ended Grant's night with Ty Edmonds coming between the pipes for Prince George. The new goaltender got some goal support when Jari Erricson got behind the Regina defence and tucked a backhand past Daniel Wapple to pull the Cougars within a 3-1 count before the midway point of the period. Towards the end of the frame, on a three-on-one opportunity, Klimchuk and Steel hooked up for a sweet passing play finishing with Klimchuk to put Regina ahead 4-1 after forty and holding a 23-16 edge in shots.
Third Period
Prince George drew back within two early just shy of the seven minute mark when Jared Bethune wired a shot from the blue line that eluded Wapple. The Pats powerplay got it back though with Hunt and Gay putting together some nice passing before Gay dished to Sergey Zborovskiy for the one-timer and a 5-2 Pats lead. With time winding down, the play got chippy and resulted in a Pats powerplay to close the game. Morgan Klimchuk came within an inch of a hat-trick, but hit iron and the contest ended at a 5-2 count. The Cougars kept Wapple busy in the third and led the shots overall, 32-31 after sixty.
The Pats are back in action Friday night when they face off with the Kamloops Blazers. Tune into the contest on 620 CKRM with Home Depot Pats Hockey starting at 8:35 p.m. CST.
