SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi RiverKings held their first of two Face Off Field Trips Tuesday morning at the Landers Center. The Face Off Field Trip brings students from local schools to a RiverKings game, where they take part in an educational experience while also enjoying a hockey game.
Over 5,500 students were in attendance at the Landers Center Tuesday for the Face Off Field Trip. Overall, 19 schools participated, including schools from Desoto County, Shelby County, Memphis, Collierville Schools and Kennett Public Schools. Students received a workbook before the game and were prompted to complete questions in a variety of subjects throughout the game.
The Desoto County Schools Superintendent's Youth Leadership Council was the primary fundraiser for the game. Through the Face Off Field Trip, they raised over $7,000.
Chief Academic Officer of DeSoto County Schools, Jim Ferguson, says the partnership between the RiverKings and the Superintendent's Youth Leadership Council is critical.
"The Superintendent's Youth Leadership Council is extremely grateful for our community partnership with the RiverKings," Ferguson said. "Our program is totally funded by the Face Off Field Trips. In a nutshell our program is one of leadership coaching. It is an honor to lead some of the most incredible students in the world. The investment by the RiverKings is and will continue to produce great rewards."
Over 30 volunteers from the Navy, the Superintendent's Youth Leadership Council and others pitched in to help make the day a success.
The final Face Off Field Trip of the 2014-15 season is January 27. For more information visit riverkings.com/faceofffieldtrip.
