Last week, the Wheeling Nailers played the first three of 13 games against the Elmira Jackals this season, posting a 2-1-0 record with one victory in each building. On Wednesday morning, WesBanco Arena was filled with 4,855 fans, and that support helped rally the Nailers from a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 shootout win. Derek Army and Clark Seymour knotted the score in the third, before David Gilbert and Zack Torquato tallied in the shootout. Eric Hartzell turned aside all four shootout attempts he faced. On Saturday night, Wheeling appeared to be headed toward another comeback win, as Nick D'Agostino, Torquato, and Max MacKay erased 2-0 and 3-1 leads for a 3-3 deadlock in the third period. Unfortunately, the Jackals took back control from there, scoring three straight times for the 6-3 decision. On Sunday afternoon, Eric Hartzell and Derek Army teamed up to get the Nailers back into the win column, as Hartzell stopped 38 saves for a shutout, while Army scored both goals in the 2-0 triumph on enemy ice.
Eric Hartzell's 38-save performance on Sunday was the highest total in his professional career, as he improved to 7-0-0 with two shutouts in seven lifetime starts against Elmira. Clark Seymour's goal on Wednesday morning was the first of his pro career, giving him the team lead in points by a defenseman with five. Derek Army has scored seven goals in 17 games over the course of two seasons with the Nailers, including a pair of two-goal contests. Wheeling became the final Eastern Conference team to play in an overtime game, when it required a shootout on Wednesday morning. The Nailers and Greenville Road Warriors have played the fewest home games in the Eastern Conference, as both have taken the ice five times in front of their home fans.
This Week
Wed. 11/26 Greenville Road Warriors @ WHEELING NAILERS, 7:05
Fri. 11/28 Florida Everblades @ WHEELING NAILERS, 7:35
Sat. 11/29 Florida Everblades @ WHEELING NAILERS, 7:35
This week, the Wheeling Nailers will begin a five-game homestand, facing a pair of teams who aren't typically frequent visitors to WesBanco Arena. On Wednesday night, Wheeling will look for revenge against the Greenville Road Warriors, who elminated the Nailers in six games during the 2014 Eastern Conference Semifinal. The Road Warriors currently own a 10-7-0 record, which includes six victories away from Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Jason Missiaen and Jeff Malcolm make up the goaltending tandem for the second straight year, while Michael St. Croix is Greenville's leading scorer with 13 points. Over the weekend, the Florida Everblades will make their only trips to the Ohio Valley this season, as Wheeling hopes to end a five-game winless skid in the all-time series. Each of Florida's last four wins in Wheeling have come via the shootout, with all four featuring a tying goal (2 by WHL, 2 by FLA) during the last minute of regulation. The Everblades have the best record in the ECHL, entering the week at 11-2-1, good for 23 points. Adam Brace (Riley's cousin) is Florida's leading scorer with 13 points, while 2013-14 South Carolina Stingray Allen York is 8-1-1 between the pipes.
