Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates today announced that they have reassigned defenseman James Melindy and forward Dan O'Donoghue to their ECHL affiliate, the Gwinnett Gladiators.
Melindy, a 6-foot-3, 195 pound defenseman from St. John's, Newfoundland, is in his second pro season. The 20 year-old has played in nine games with Portland so far this season and has collected six penalty minutes. In his rookie year last season, Melindy played 38 games for the Pirates and scored two goals. He made his pro debut at the end of the 2012-13 season, playing two games for Portland.
Melindy was selected in the 3rd Round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. Prior to turning pro, Melindy played three seasons with the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL. This will be Melindy's first assignment to the ECHL.
O'Donoghue, a 6-foot-5, 210 pound center from Port Jefferson, New York, has played four games for Portland so far in his rookie season, without registering a point.
The 23 year-old also skated in three games with the Pirates last season after he signed a two-year Entry Level Contract with the Arizona Coyotes last April.
Earlier this season, O'Donoghue played one game with Gwinnett, dishing out an assist. Before joining the pro ranks, he played four seasons of NCAA Division I Men's Hockey with the Mercyhurst University Lakers.
Both Melindy and O'Donoghue will join the Gladiators in time for their home game tomorrow night against the South Carolina Stingrays.
The Pirates return home to play two games Thanksgiving Week at Cross Insurance Arena. The Pirates host the Worcester Sharks on Wednesday night and the Providence Bruins on Black Friday. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m. Call 207-PIRATES (747-2837) or go online to portlandpirates.com today to save up to 40% on game day prices!
