Mohawks in the Majors in 2014

Amsterdam Mohawks News Release

Last week we looked at Hunter Pence and his incredible season. (Click Here to see the article). This week we look at the other Mohawks who donned a major league uniform in 2014.

Logan Darnell was the ace of Amsterdam's 2008 pitching staff. The Kentucky pitcher was 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA in 34.1 innings that summer. The Twins drafted Darnell in the sixth round of the 2010 draft and he has progressed through the Twins system ever since

"It was a lot of failure and a lot of learning how to make adjustments along the way" said Darnell, but on May 2nd Logan got the call and was officially a member of the Minnesota Twins.

Darnell made his MLB debut on May 6th in Cleveland, as he pitched 3 perfect innings against the Indians and his fastball topped out at 95 MPH. He wasn't the only former Mohawk in attendance that night. 1993 Mohawk Matt Quatraro (Old Dominion) is the Indians assistant hitting coach and Logan's 2008 Mohawks teammate Rick Pacione (Marist) is the Indians bullpen catcher (and in an odd twist I happened to be passing through Cleveland that day and was able to catch up with Rick and Logan for that special event).

Soon after Logan was sent back to AAA Rochester and bounced around the AAA level and the Majors for the remainder of the season.

On July 26th, Darnell returned to the Twins and made his first Major League start against the Chicago White Sox. Darnell lasted 5 innings and gave up 7 runs with 7 strikeouts in the Twins 7-0 loss to the White Sox and Cy Young finalist Chris Sale.

As a member of the Rochester Red Wings, Logan was part of a strange no-hitter. Let's go through the timeline of events here:

July 24: Trevor May starts for Rochester and pitches 3 hitless innings against Durham. The game is suspended due to rain in the middle of the fourth inning.

August 9: Trevor May is recalled by the Twins.

August 11: The game between Rochester and Durham resumes. With May no longer on the team, Logan Darnell takes over and adds 6 hitless innings to complete the no-hitter.

Rochester catcher Dan Rohlfing congratulates Darnell after finishing the no-hitter.

This season with the Twins, Darnell was 0-2 with a 7.13 ERA. He pitched in 7 games and made 4 starts with 22 strikeouts in 24 innings. With Rochester Darnell was 7-6 with a 3.60 ERA and struck out 90 batters in 115 innings.

This spring we expect Darnell to compete for a spot in the Twins rotation. It looks like he may start the season with AAA Rochester again, but he should be on the short list of potential call ups if the Twins rotation needs help.

Cord Phelps, a former member of the Cleveland Indians was picked up off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles last year. The Mohawks 2006 infielder and Stanford grad started the season with AAA Norfolk and got off to a really poor start. However, Phelps turned his season around in July and hit .336 until he was called up on August 13th.

Phelps only appeared in 3 games for Baltimore and was 0-for-3 during his short stint. He returned to Norfolk on August 30th. For Norfolk, Phelps hit .259 in 99 games. He had 13 doubles, 5 triples, 7 home runs, and 51 RBI.

We hope to see Phelps return to the Orioles organization for the 2015 season. An already versatile infielder, if Cord can continue the hot hitting he had in the second half of the season he should be able to return to the majors in a utility role.
