Teal Bunbury opened the scoring in the 17th minute on Sunday afternoon with his second goal of the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs. The midfielder took a pass from Jermaine Jones, took a touch inside and bent a left-footed shot past Luis Robles to put New England up 1-0.

Bradley Wright-Phillips would equalize in the 27th minute with his fourth goal of the playoffs. After Peguy Luyindula's shot was stopped by Bobby Shuttleworth, the rebound came off the cross bar for Wright-Phillips to head home and level the score at 1-1.

Wright-Phillips, who leads all playoff scorers with four goals, nearly had his fifth in first-half stoppage time. Thierry Henry whipped in a left-footed cross from the left wing, but Wright-Phillips' header sailed high over the bar.

Lloyd Sam had another chance to put the Red Bulls ahead in the 52nd minute. Henry put a right-footed shot on target from outside the area that Shuttleworth saved, but the rebound found its way to Sam who put a sliding attempt just wide.

Wright-Phillips then picked up a yellow card in the 60th minute on Sunday, his second of the playoffs, and will be unavailable for the return leg on Saturday.

Jones would put New England ahead in the 85th minute with his first goal of the playoffs. After Lee Nguyen played Bunbury through down the right wing, the midfielder slid a pass through to Jones who finished the tap in to put the Revolution up 2-1.
