The Return of the Comeback Kids

The Wheeling Nailers faced a tall task on Wednesday morning, as they trailed the Elmira Jackals 2-0, heading into the third period. However, the team that created plenty of magical comebacks in 2013-14 was able to give 4,855 fans something to get extremely excited about, as it came back to tie and eventually win the game. Derek Army and Clark Seymour tallied in the third period to draw the Nailers even at two, before David Gilbert and Zack Torquato dented the twine in the shootout. Eric Hartzell denied all four Elmira shooters he faced in the shootout, following a 19-save effort during the game. Seymour's tying goal in the third was the first of his professional career.

A Long Week Made Even Longer

The Elmira Jackals are in the middle of a stretch that sees them take the ice four times in five days this week, finishing with Sunday afternoon's game against Wheeling. Both of Elmira's first two tilts this week have gone past regulation, as the Nailers picked up a 3-2 shootout win on Wednesday morning, before the Jackals bounced back for a 3-2 overtime win on Friday night against the Reading Royals. Reading battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits during the contest, before Allan McPherson's goal 1:44 into the extra session clinched the victory for Elmira. Travis Fullerton was the winning goaltender for the Jackals, making 29 saves on 31 shots.

Bonus Hockey and a Bonus Point to Show

It took until the 11th game of the regular season, but the Nailers finally became the final Eastern Conference team to reach overtime, as they and the Jackals needed longer than sixty minutes to decide a winner. Despite five combined shots on goal, the four-on-four session also wasn't sufficient, forcing the teams to a shootout. That's where David Gilbert and Zack Torquato provided the heroics, lifting Wheeling to victory. Although the Nailers have a winning record all-time in shootouts (116-108), that category has been anything but friendly for a little less than a decade. The last time Wheeling posted a winning record in a shootout during a single season was 2004-05, when it was 6-3.

Multidimensional Defensemen

With an 8-3-3 record to start the season, one would think that life has been smooth sailing for the Jackals in their first 14 contests. However, on Friday night, Elmira was left with seven natural forwards to finish the game. Andrew Conboy left the game early, while Lucas Bloodoff (8 games) and Matt Tassone (6 games) have both been out of the lineup recently. The Jackals also saw two forwards head to the AHL, as Brayden Irwin and Justin Kea are currently members of the Rochester Americans. Over the past few games, Patch Alber and Rob Florentino have played a forward position, while Elmira also acquired forward Stefano Momesso in a trade with the Nailers.

First Visit to the Dog House

Saturday night marks the second of 13 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Jackals this season, as well as the first of six battles between the two clubs at First Arena. From 2007-13, visits to Elmira tended to be unpleasant for Wheeling, as the home team skated away victorious on 22 of 30 occasions. However, the 2013-14 version of the Nailers wrote a new script, winning six of their eight road tilts in the season series, including each of the final four. Following this weekend, Wheeling won't make its way to New York again until a two-game series on March 20th and 21st, which will begin a series of four games at First Arena in less than a month to conclude the regular season.
