Delayed Start Due to Weather; Whalers Remain Hot

Even a two hour delay wasn't enough to cool down the red hot Danbury Whalers tonight. Due to circumstances out of the control of either team, the scheduled 7:35 face-off was pushed back to 9:35. However, the late start didn't seem to faze the home team, as Ryan Patsch had two goals and Kevin Hoy made 36 saves as the Whalers extended their winning streak to a franchise record of eight in a row with a 6-1 victory over Steel City on Friday night.

In a game where one might expect a little bit of a slow start from visiting Steel City, both teams came out and exchanged quality scoring chances. The Whalers scored the lone goal in the first period thanks to the 7th tally of the season for Ryan Patsch. The 2013 Co-Rookie of the year was the beneficiary of a juicy rebound given up by Warriors goaltender Dalton McGrath on a breakaway by Tim Richter. The CT native sent a back hand shot on goal that was kicked out by McGrath right the waiting Patsch who buried it home to make it 1-0 Danbury. The Whalers out shot the Warriors 21-11 after one period of play.

In the second period the Whalers came out and wasted little time in extending their lead as Brett Liscomb connected for his 6th goal of the season just 2:17 into the middle frame. Kristaps Nimanis blasted the puck onto the Warriors goal where goalie Dalton McGrath couldn't handle the rebound and Liscomb tucked home the rebound to make it 2-0. Just over three minutes later Ryan Patsch made it a 3-0 Danbury lead as he corralled a loose puck in the neutral zone and sprung free on a breakaway beating McGrath through the five hole. It was the 2nd of the game for Patsch and 8th of the season. Then at 12:59 Mike Zanella collected his 2nd of the season on a nifty drop pass from Vladyslav Gavrik who led the 3 on 2 charge into the Warrior zone where he dropped a pass to Zanella who fired it past the blocker of McGath and made it 4-0 Danbury. The Warriors had a few good opportunities to get on the scoreboard, including a 5 on 3 power play for twenty five seconds, but Kevin Hoy shut the door as the Whalers took the four goal lead into the second intermission.

In the third period the Warriors finally got on the board thanks to the 4th goal of the season for Tom Tracy. Zach Tatrn sent a backhand shot on goal that was kicked out by Hoy right to a waiting Tracy who buried it upstairs and made it a 4-1 game. Ian Delong and and Vladyslov Gavrik collected goals in the third for Danbury to make it a 6-1 game. It was the 10th of the season for Delong while Gavrik tallied his 3rd.
