WINDSOR - The Sarnia Sting came up with an important 5-3 victory over the Windsor Spitfires, Thursday night in front of 4,780 fans at the Windsor Family Credit Union Centre.

Not only was it their second straight win, the victory moved Sarnia into an eighth place tie in the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League with Plymouth, each with 18 points. Sarnia has a game in hand.

The win also improved Sarnia's overall record to 8-10-1-1.

Sarnia appeared headed for a lopsided win when they took a 3-0 lead after one period. But Windsor fought back to even the game by the nine-minute mark of period three. Sarnia then scored two goals in the final seven minutes to gain the two points.

The Sting came out like a house on fire in the opening period. They outshot Windsor 16-6 and jumped out to that three-goal lead.

Sarnia took advantage of their first power play opportunity. Davis Brown opened the scoring at 3:12 when he drilled a wrist shot into the top corner from the slot. Pavel Zacha, (back from a two-game suspension), and Nikita Korostelev assisted on Brown's eighth goal of the year.

Defenceman Kevin Spinozzi increased the lead to 2-0 at 11:57 when he scored his fourth of the year and third in two games. Spinozzi came from behind the net to jam the puck past the Windsor goalie. Brown and Brandon Lindberg picked up assists.

Just over a minute later, Haydon Hodgson made it 3-0 when he deflected home a shot from Vladislav Kodola. Goalie Taylor Dupuis also assisted on Hodgson's eighth goal.

The second period was a completely different story. Windsor held a 17-5 edge in shots on goal and scored twice to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Spitfires scored just 20 seconds into period two on a goalie by Slater Doggett. Three minutes later Doggett got his second of the game on a power play knocking a third rebound past Dupuis.

Windsor thought they had tied the game with just under three minutes left in the period, but the goal was waved off due to goalie interference.

But the Spitfires did tie the game at 8:42 of period three when Logan Brown finished off a two-on-one break.

Despite the momentum of the game in Windsor's favour, Sarnia scored what turned out to be the game-winner at 14:03 while shorthanded.

Troy Lajeunesse did the work along the boards in the Windsor zone. He took what appeared to be an innocent looking shot on goal that was stopped by the goalie, by Korostelev was right there to knock in the rebound. It was his 11th of the year.

Daniel Nikandrov added an insurance goal, his fifth of the year at 18:23 on a nice individual effort for an unassisted tally.

Dupuis recorded the win in goal for the Sting while Alex Fotinos took the loss. Windsor held a 35-28 edge in shots on goal.

Sarnia was one-for-three on the power play while Windsor was one-for-seven.

The Sting returns to action Friday night when they host the first place Erie Otters. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at the RBC Centre. Sarnia will also be home Sunday afternoon when they take on the Saginaw Spirit. Game time is 4:05 p.m.

Kids will be admitted for just $6 for the Sunday game. There will also be a post-game skate with Sting players free of charge. The first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a collectable World Junior Champions card.

STING NOTES

- Brown took first star honours with his goal and assist. Doggett of Windsor was second star while Korostelev, who also had a goal and assist, was third star. Korostelev continues to lead the team in scoring with 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points in 18 games.

- Not dressed for the Sting were first round draft pick, Jakob Chychrun, Connor Schlichting and Matt Ciccarelli, (all injured).

- The Sting expect newly acquired, overage forward, Stephen Pierog will be in the lineup Friday night against Erie. Pierog was acquired Thursday from the Guelph Storm in exchange for a third round pick in 2017 and a 10th round pick in 2016.

- Last night's game was the start of a busy schedule for the Sting as they play 13 games over the next 20 days.

- Sarnia improved to 5-7-1-0 on the road.

- The Sting is now 2-0 against Windsor this season. They play four more times.
