Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday assigned center Stephen Weiss to the Grand Rapids Griffins for conditioning and reassigned goaltender Jared Coreau from the Griffins to the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. In addition, Grand Rapids recalled defenseman Scott Czarnowczan from Toledo and signed goaltender Jeff Lerg to a professional tryout.

With an NHL career spanning 13 years, Weiss has accumulated 398 points (147-251 - 398) in 681 games between Detroit and the Florida Panthers. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Weiss was Florida's first choice (4th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and is the Panthers' all-time leader in assists (249) and games played (654).

The 31-year-old Weiss was limited to just 26 games for the Wings in 2013-14 and did not play after Dec. 10 following hernia surgery. Earlier this season, he appeared in one game with the Red Wings before a brief conditioning stint in Grand Rapids, when he made his Griffins debut in a 2-1 loss to the Rockford IceHogs on Oct. 29.

A native of Perth, Ontario, Coreau has garnered a 2.73 goals against average in five games with Toledo this season, alongside a 4-1-0 record and a 0.899 save percentage. During his 2013-14 campaign, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound goaltender registered a 4.03 GAA in 20 games with the Walleye and a 4.39 GAA in five games with the Griffins.

Czarnowczan, 23, ranks first among Toledo blueliners in scoring with nine assists in 11 contests. After making his professional debut and tallying a goal and assist in two games with the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads last season, the first-year pro was signed to a Griffins contract on July 4. Prior to turning pro, the Macomb, Mich., native spent four seasons with the Ferris State Bulldogs, where he gathered 63 points (9-54 - 63) and 212 PIM in 141 collegiate games. In addition to captaining the Bulldogs during his senior season, Czarnowczan made an appearance with Ferris State in the 2012 NCAA Frozen Four Championship game.

The 28-year-old Lerg, who backed up Tom McCollum during the Griffins' 2-1 overtime win against Texas last Saturday, has played the primary role between the pipes for Toledo this season, ranking second among league netminders with a 1.98 GAA, in addition to a 0.933 save percentage and a 5-1-1 record. Lerg's last tour in the ECHL was a two-season stint with the Trenton Devils from 2009-11, when he produced a 3.32 GAA in 29 appearances. Prior to his professional career, the Livonia, Mich., native spent four seasons (2005-09) with Michigan State University and turned out a 2.38 GAA and a 76-51-17 record.

The Griffins will spar in a home-and-home against the Lake Erie Monsters on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Van Andel Arena.
