Late Lead Vanishes in 4-3 Shootout Loss to Mallards

MOLINE, IL - A 3-1 Tulsa Oilers lead with less than two and half minutes remaining in regulation turned into a 4-3 shootout loss at the hands of the Quad City Mallards at the iWireless Center on Wednesday night. Evan Haney and Justin Fox scored just 57 seconds apart to complete the Mallards' late surge and force the Oilers to settle for only a single point. For the second night in a row, Tulsa surrendered more than 40 shots on goal and watched a third period lead disappear.

After a scoreless first period, the Oilers broke the stalemate at 8:41 of the middle frame. Drew Fisher, back in the Tulsa lineup after missing the last two games, led a rush into the Mallards' zone that resulted in a backhand goal by Adam Pleskach. The second-year winger lit the lamp for the 11th time this season and the Oilers carried their 1-0 edge into the 2nd intermission.

Three minutes into the third, Quad City Mario Lamoureux finally gave the home crowd something to cheer about. Lamoureux pounced on a loose puck between the circles and fired past Tulsa netminder Kevin Carr to level the game at 1-1. The Mallards' excitement lasted only 27 seconds as Fisher set up Booras for a center-lane wrist shot that sizzled past Parker Milner to restore the Oilers advantage. Only 20 seconds after Booras connected for his fourth goal of the season, Tommy Mele snapped a loose puck over Milner's shoulder to give the visitors a two-goal cushion. At the 5:11 mark, with tempers flaring in front of the Tulsa bench, Mele, standing in the bench area, attempted to come to the defense of Jake Obermeyer but was given a game misconduct for "fighting off the playing surface." The Oilers maintained their two-goal lead until the closing minutes when Milner was brought to the bench in favor of an extra attacker. With a 6-on-5 advantage, Kevin Baker found a wide open Haney at the side of the Tulsa net and Quad City was back within striking distance. At 18:34, a centering feed from Joe Perry was knocked down in front of Carr but Fox found the puck first and extended his point streak to nine games with his sixth goal of the season.

In overtime, Oilers defenseman Dave Pszenyczny was called for tripping, giving the Mallards a 4-on-3 power play. Tulsa was able to block enough shots and get enough saves from Carr to send the game into a shootout.

Fox and Lamoureux gave Quad City a 2-1 lead in the shootout and Tulsa's last chance, Steve Mele, was denied by Milner to seal the victory for the Mallards. The Oilers fell to 2-1 in shootouts this season and 6-4-2 overall.

The Oilers wrap up a short, two-game road trip in Missouri on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Fox and Hound (71st and Garnett) is the site of the official Bud Light Tulsa Oilers Watch Party.
