Norfolk Admirals News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers jumped out to a two-goal lead and added four more in the final 40 minutes in a 6-2 rout of the Norfolk Admirals at Time Warner Cable Arena on Tuesday night.

The game was barely underway before the scoring began. At 2:28 of the first period, Charlotte's Alex Aleardi found twine. Positioned in front, Aleardi tipped a pass from Trevor Carrick past a screened Yann Danis to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead.

Charlotte poured on shots after Aleardi's tally, with Norfolk struggling to clear the puck out of the defensive zone. The hosts took advantage, and just 39 seconds later Rasmus Rissanen released a slapper from the left side of the blue line. AJ Jenks received the sole assist and put the Checkers up, 2-0.

The Admirals cut the lead to one at 13:43 of the first period. Andrew O'Brien ripped a shot through traffic which Checkers goaltender John Muse initially stopped. John Kurtz, positioned at the right post, flipped in the puck over Muse for his second goal of the year. The period ended with Charlotte ahead, 2-1.

Only one marker would be scored in the second period. Four minutes and four seconds into the middle frame, the Checkers' Michal Jordan extended his team's lead to 3-1. AJ Jenks made a back pass to Jordan, who snapped the puck from the hash marks. Jordan's shot was headed wide, but hit Marc Cantin in front and trickled in. Charlotte owned a two-goal cushion heading to the third.

The rout escalated in the third period, with Charlotte ultimately putting up another three on the scoreboard. Justin Shugg completed a pristine tic-tac-toe play with Chad LaRose and Jordan 38 seconds into the final frame during the power play. Greg Nemisz slid the puck to Ryan Murphy near the slot who one-touched it to Shugg at the post. Danis couldn't slide over in time, and Charlotte went up 4-1. Nemisz scored a goal of his own at the backdoor on the break from LaRose and Jordan 8:32 into the period and added an additional marker 54 seconds later, shorthanded at 9:26.

Antoine Laganiere gave the Admirals another goal late in the third at 16:28. Kevin Gagne made the initial shot from the slot, which was knocked down at the edge of the goal mouth. Laganiere pounced on the rebound and backhanded it into the net. Nathan McIver notched the secondary assist, and the game concluded with a 6-2 score in favor of Charlotte.

Danis stopped 27 of 33 shots, while Muse pushed aside 26 of 28.

Norfolk struggled on the power play, going scoreless while a man up on five total opportunities. Charlotte went 1-for-4.

The Admirals return home this weekend when they play a back-to-back series against the Portland Pirates, beginning Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
