November 15, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans scored three times in the third period, but could not overcome another early deficit as the Amerks dropped a 7-4 decision in a high scoring affair to the visiting Chicago Wolves Saturday at The Blue Cross Arena. The game was the first meeting between the two clubs since the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs, when Chicago eliminated the Amerks in five games during the opening round of the postseason.

The loss ends a tough five-game homestand for the Amerks, who see their overall record drop to 7-8-0-0 on the season.

Brayden Irwin, Chad Ruhwedel, Dan Catenacci and Johan Larsson all scored goals for the Amerks with Phil Varone finishing with two assists to extend a personal scoring streak to four games. Nathan Lieuwen and Andrey Makarov both saw time in net, combining for 17 saves on the night with Lieuwen accepting the loss.

Ty Rattie recorded a hat trick for the Wolves, the first of his professional career, while Mathieu Brodeur scored twice to propel Chicago to its fifth win in six games. Jordan Binnington started in net for the visitors, and made 27 saves for the win.

Chicago jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, beginning with a goal from Brodeur just 36 seconds into the contest, and Rattie added his first goal of the night 2:37 later.

Irwin brought the Amerks to within a goal with his first of the season on a wrap-around play from behind the net 8:25 into the opening period, but Chicago answered 44 seconds later with Brodeur's second tally of the period to make it a 3-1 game.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the second period, Makarov replaced Lieuwen in net, but Chicago would score four goals during the middle frame, including two from Rattie to earn him the hat-trick.

Lieuwen returned to the net to start the third period, and the Amerks responded with three goals in the final 20 minutes in support. The first came on a power-play opportunity, when Ruhwedel fired a slap-shot from the blueline that snuck through Irwin's screen and past Binnington to bring the score to 7-2 just 48 seconds into the third.

The Amerks scored again midway through the third on Catenacci's second goal of the season, after Matt Ellis made a nice pass to the second-year forward out front, and Catenacci put the puck upstairs, bringing the score to 7-3.

Larsson would get in on the third period surge with an absolute blast from the left wing that beat Binnington up high with two minutes left in regulation, but it would prove to be too little too late.

The Amerks wrap up their first three-game weekend of the season on Sunday, Nov. 16 when they visit the North Division rival Hamilton Bulldogs for an afternoon matchup at FirstOntario Centre in southern Ontario. The 3:00 p.m. matinee will be the fourth of 10 scheduled meetings between the two teams this season and will be carried live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester.
