Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Kitchener Rangers scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Erie Otters on Saturday night. Liam Maaskant, Justin Bailey and Brent Pedersen each recorded a goal and an assist in the win, the Rangers' second consecutive victory.

The Otters recorded the lone goal of the opening period, scoring just past the 10 minute mark. Veteran forward Nick Betz continued his blistering pace, picking up a pass from Travis Wood and tipping a backhand shot by Rangers starter Matthew Greenfield. Betz has recorded a career-high 23 points this season, including four in his last five outings. Jesse Saban also assisted on the Michigan native's 10th goal of the year.

Each team fired six shots on goal in the second period.

A second period power play marker lifted Erie to a 2-0 lead near the halfway point. Otters standout Dylan Strome leaned into the shot from the slot and bounced it high over the glove of Greenfield for his 14th of the year. Rearguards Darren Raddysh and Travis Dermott earned the helpers on the goal, Strome's 12th point in his last five games.

With just 6.1 seconds remaining before the second intermission, rookie Adam Mascherin put the Rangers on the board, firing a wrist shot from the faceoff dot that ricocheted off the right goal post and the crossbar before trickling past netminder Devin Williams. The second overall pick in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection, Mascherin has three goals for the Rangers this season. Brent Pedersen picked up an assist, his sixth point in four games. Captain Liam Maaskant was also credited with a helper on the play.

The Otters led shots on goal 10-8 in the middle frame.

Justin Bailey pulled the Rangers even early in the second, when he corralled the puck behind the Otters net, carried it out and fired a shot that beat Williams short-side, bringing his season goal total to 14. The Buffalo Sabres prospect has four goals in his past two games, and four in his last two meetings with the Otters after potting a hat trick on his last trip to Erie. Ryan MacInnis earned the lone assist on the play, giving the Missouri native points in three straight games.

Defenceman Max Iafrate gave Kitchener its first lead of the game with less than eight minutes remaining, firing a long, hard shot that bounced off a player in front and past Williams. His fifth of the year was assisted by fellow overager Curtis Meighan, and gives the American rearguard points in 12 of his last 13 games.

The Rangers struck again just 12 seconds later when Pedersen unleashed a shot that soared past Williams, lifting the club to a 4-2 lead. The unassisted tally was the assistant captain's sixth of the season, and his second point of the game.

The quick goals sparked a goaltending change, as the Otters sent Daniel Dekoning to the crease in relief of Williams.

Maaskant added one more goal for Kitchener just over two minutes later. The former Erie blueliner snapped a long shot through traffic that beat Dekoning high, just clearing the crossbar. The goal was the second of the year for the Clinton, ON native. Assists on the play were credited to Bailey and MacInnis, the second point of the night for each forward.

The Rangers outshot the Otters 12-9 in the final frame at 26-25 overall. Greenfield made 23 saves to secure his sixth win of his sophomore season.

Kitchener is the first team to defeat the Otters at the Erie Insurance Arena this season. The win also improves the team to 11-3-2-3 this season.
