Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

CHICOUTIMI, QC - Mathieu Joseph scored the game-winning goal with 1:48 remaining in the third period, as the Saint John Sea Dogs edged the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, 2-1, in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday at Centre Georges-Vezina.

Mark Tremaine also scored for Saint John (14-4-0-3), which won for the fifth time in six games.

Charles Guevremont responded for Chicoutimi (8-13-1-0).

The teams split the two-game season series.

Saint John had the best chance to score early in the game when Spencer Smallman blasted a slap shot from the right side that was stopped by Chicoutimi goalie Julio Billia. Defenceman Jack vanBoekel jumped on the rebound chance and forced Billia to make another save in close.

The Sea Dogs did find the net on a power play with over seven minutes remaining in the period.

Tremaine took a feed in the left circle, faked a pass, and then whistled a wrist shot over the blocking shoulder of Billia.

Chicoutimi earned back-to-back man advantages late in the frame, but Saint John netminder Sebastien Auger kept his team's lead intact.

Sags' captain Laurent Dauphin sent a pass across the slot to the left circle for Landon Schiller, who ripped a wrister that Auger denied with his left shoulder.

Chicoutimi tied the game two minutes into the second period when Guevremont stole the puck on the right wing side, moved into the slot and wristed a low shot that got inside the left post.

The teams traded chances to score late in the period, but the game stayed 1-1.

With about eight minutes left, Samuel Dove-McFalls sent a pass across the crease to his left for Matthew Green, who chopped the puck out of the air on goal. Billia made the save with his right leg and smothered the rebound.

Close to five minutes after that, Sags forward Alexandre Ranger charged toward the goal with a shorthanded chance, but Auger got his glove on the backhand shot and kept the puck out.

Joseph then banked a shot off the right post after taking a nice pass from Matthew Green on the right side.

The Chambly, Quebec, native buried the winning goal with 1:48 to go in the third period.

Daniel Del Paggio carried the puck into the Chicoutimi zone on the right wing side and saw Joseph in the slot. Joseph snapped a hard wrist shot past Billia's blocker and inside the right post.

Despite having to kill a penalty, Chicoutimi pulled Billia for an extra attacker, but were unable to tie the game.

Auger was named first star with 24 saves in the win. Billia earned second star with 32 stops in a losing cause. Dauphin finished the game with seven shots in a third star performance in front of 2,109 fans in attendance.
