Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons defeated the Providence Bruins, 4-3, tonight at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
The win brings the Falcons up to 7-7-1-0 and moves the teams to 1-1-0-0 in the eight-game season series. The Bruins now sit at 7-5-1-0 on the season.
Springfield goaltender Scott Munroe turned away 31 of 34 shots in victory, while Providence goaltender Jeremy Smith stopped 31 of 35. The Falcons were able to convert on one of four power play opportunities. The penalty kill unit allowed two goals on six Bruins man-advantages.
The Falcons opened scoring and carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Lukas Sedlak won the face-off in the left circle and shot the puck out to Austin Madaisky. Madaisky fired from the left point and beat Smith top shelf at the 8:29 mark.
The Bruins notched two goals to take the lead in the middle frame, but the Falcons were able to even the score before the end of the period. Rob Flick carried the puck into the offensive zone and dropped a pass to Jared Knight, who wristed a shot from right circle to tie the Falcons just 2:10 into the period. The Bruins took the lead at the 13:39 mark. David Pastrnak faked a slap shot from the high slot and sent the puck down to Ryan Spooner in the right corner. After controlling the puck, Spooner found the back of the net from the right circle. Alexander Khokhlachev earned credit for the secondary assist on the power-play goal.
With 4:05 remaining in the second, Andrew Cherniwchan entered the Bruins zone with enough speed to beat a defender and get off a shot from the right wing that tied the game, 2-2. Thomas Larkin picked up a point for the helper.
Springfield scored twice in the third period to go up 4-2 before earning a response from Providence. However, the Bruins ran out of time and fell, 4-3. Ryan Craig broke the tie on the power play halfway through the period. After a series of passes at the blue line, Madaisky ripped a slap shot that was redirected by Craig in the crease. Marko Dano earned his first point with the Falcons this season with the secondary assist.
Corey Cowick scored the game-winner with a short-handed empty net goal just as Smith went to the bench for an extra Bruins attacker. Craig cleared the puck from the Falcons zone, while Cowick directed it into the empty cage to go up by two.
With 41 seconds remaining in the game, Frankie Simonelli tried to initiate a come back with a power-play goal assisted by Brian Ferlin and Khokhlachev. The effort was cut short and the Falcons won with a final score of 4-3.
The Springfield Falcons will travel to face the Worcester Sharks on Nov. 14 and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Nov. 15 before returning to the MassMutual Center to host the Sound Tigers on Nov. 21.
