Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - As the cold weather sneaks in to the Walla Walla Valley, the Walla Walla Sweets front office has an eye on the summer and the return of baseball. The 2015 West Coast League season is slated to begin on June 5, 2015 and the Sweets announced today the addition of two players from North Dakota State University to their roster for the upcoming season.

Jon Hechtner, a junior at NDSU, is a native of Omaha, Nebraska and a graduate of Creighton Prep High School. The 5-foot 10-inch, 175-pound outfielder appeared in 47 games for the Bison as a sophomore, hitting .278 with three doubles and one triple. As a freshman for North Dakota, Hectner played in 49 of 53 games, and was the top hitting freshman with a .269 average.

"Jon is a two year starter at Division I North Dakota State, and will bring a lot of experience to our outfield this summer," said Sweets manager Frank Mutz. "He's considered a tough out offensively and will frustrate opposing pitchers. I've spoken with his coaches and I am confident Jon will give all of himself to the Sweets during the 2015 season."

Juan Gamez, a 6-foot, 215-pound, is a junior catcher for the Bison. A native of Tuscon, Arizona, Gamez transferred to North Dakota State from Pima Community College Aztecs. Last season for the Aztecs, Gamez hit .274 in 52 games, while leading the team with 11 steals. In 2013, as a freshman, Gamez hit .284 in 39 appearances.

"Juan is in his first season at North Dakota State, and is a catcher who can really run, and will likely see significant time behind the plate for the Bison in 2015," added Mutz. "Juan has good defensive skills, but is also a threat offensively. With his combination of speed and power, Juan will strengthen the middle of the Sweets line up."

The Walla Walla Sweets will open the 2015 season of WCL baseball on June 5, 2015. Season tickets, Friends and Family Passes, and 12-game vouchers are on sale now.
