Cornish, Jones Are Finalists for CFL Awards

Running back Jon Cornish and centre Brett Jones of the Calgary Stampeders have both been voted as West Division finalists for major Canadian Football League awards.

For a third consecutive year, Cornish has been tabbed as the Most Outstanding Canadian in the West Division while Jones is the West's representative for the Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award. Both players won CFL awards a year ago as Cornish received both the Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian trophies while Jones was voted Most Outstanding Rookie.

Cornish, who was named top Canadian in both 2012 and 2013, is bidding to become the first player to win the award in three consecutive years since Ottawa's Tony Gabriel (1976-78). He's up against Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive lineman Ted Laurent, the East Division finalist, for the award.

Jones is attempting to become the first Stampeder to win the Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award since Ben Archibald in 2010. The East Division finalist is Jeff Perrett of the Montreal Alouettes.

The award finalists are determined through a vote by the Football Reporters of Canada and CFL head coaches. The winners will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 27 during Grey Cup week festivities in Vancouver.

Here is a closer look at the Stampeders' two finalists:

Jon Cornish (Most Outstanding Canadian): Cornish won his third consecutive league rushing title in 2014 despite playing in just nine of 18 regular-season contests. He had 1,082 yards on 139 rushes, an average of 7.8 yards per carry. Cornish cracked the 100-yard mark in six of his nine games including a season-high 174 yards against Toronto on Sept. 13. Cornish had five rushing touchdowns this season as well as 18 receptions for 133 yards and one score. On Wednesday, he was named to the West Division all-star team for a fourth consecutive season. Cornish received eight CFL player of the week awards in 2014 - offensive player of the week three times and top Canadian on five occasions - and was the league's offensive player and Canadian of the month for September. Cornish joined Johnny Bright (three in a row from 1957-59), George Reed (five straight from 1965-69) and Pringle (four in a row from 1997-2000) as the only CFLers to win at least three straight rushing titles.

Brett Jones (Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman): Jones was the only Calgary offensive lineman to start all 18 games to date this season and, as the centre, he has the responsibility of making line calls. He was an integral part of a front line that has allowed a league-low 26 sacks this season and paved the way for the Stamps to lead the CFL with an average of 143.9 rushing yards per game.
