November 12, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Four Waterloo Black Hawks were named to the roster which USA Hockey unveiled today for the 2014 World Junior A Challenge, December 14th through 20th, in Kindersley, Saskatchewan.

Defenseman Hayden Shaw and forwards Brock Boeser, Tom Novak, and Tyler Sheehy will all participate in the event as part of the U.S. Junior Select Team. The squad is made up entirely of players from the United States Hockey League. The 21-man roster includes four Cedar Rapids RoughRiders as well as the four Black Hawks; the Hawks and RoughRiders will contribute more players for the event than any other club.

Shaw and Sheehy are each in their second full seasons playing for Waterloo. In seven 2014/15 games, Shaw has seven assists. Sheehy is second in team scoring with eight goals and ten assists through 13 contests. Last year, both were named to the USHL All-Rookie Team while helping the Hawks to the Anderson Cup. Shaw is committed to North Dakota, while Sheehy is slated to attend the University of Minnesota.

First-year Hawks Boeser and Novak rank first and fourth in team scoring with 19 and 11 points respectively. Prior to the season, the tandem skated for the U.S. Under-18 Select Team during the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Czech Republic and Slovakia, as well as the 2014 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in Buffalo. Novak will eventually join Sheehy as part of the Gophers' program, while Boeser will be a Badger at the University of Wisconsin.

Team USA's first World Junior A Challenge game takes place December 15th, against Switzerland. The 2014 tournament field also includes entries from Canada East, Canada West, Denmark, and Russia. The event is in its ninth year, and the United States is competing for the eighth time. Team USA has won five of the last six tournaments. In 2013, then-Black Hawks goaltender Cal Petersen was part of the United States' gold medal effort in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
