Walleye Notes
Three's are Wild! Toledo finished this past week with a perfect 3-0-0 record and moved into third place of the North Division. Tuesday night the Walleye used a third period rally to catch South Carolina and then beat the Stingrays 4-3 in a shootout. Toledo jumped on Evansvill early Saturday night and cruised to a 5-0 win. The most exciting game of the week may have been Sunday evening as Toledo and Cincinnati battled through thirteen rounds of a shootout that was won by the Walleye 4-3.
Some New Records! Toledo is off to the best start in Walleye history with 12 points through eight games. The 2009-10 team started the year 5-2-0-1 in the first eight. Saturday night, the Walleye set a new record by holding the Evansville IceMen to just 14 shots on goal. Sunday evening was the longest shootout ever played by the Walleye smashing the old mark of eight set on November 25, 2010 at Gwinnett (a 3-2 Walleye win).
Goaltenders Shine! Both Walleye goaltenders Jared Coreau and Jeff Lerg had big weeks. On Tuesday, Coreau stopped four of four South Carolina shooters to pick up a win and he was at it again on Sunday making 10 saves on the 13 Cyclones shooters he faced in theshootout. Lerg started the Saturday game and helped slow Evansville by stopping all 14 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.
Still Streaking Along! Forward Anthony Luciani leads the Walleye in scoring with 12 points (2G, 10A) and he currently is tied for third in scoring for the entire ECHL. Luciani is also on an eight game point streak.
Three Games, Three Days, Three Teams! Toledo will continue its season high nine game home stand with three consecutive games starting Friday night against the first place Fort Wayne Komets. The Walleye have a record of 8-9-3 against Fort Wayne in the ECHL, including just 1-6-2 last year. On Saturday, the Orlando Solar Bears will invade the Huntington Center. Toledo went 0-4-0 against Orlando last season. The Reading Royals will finish the weekend in Toledo. Toledo has anall-time record of 31-26-7 against the Royals.
Promotions! Friday is Veterans Appreciation Night with the Walleye sponsored by Owens Community College, WIOT and WSPD. Tickets are just $13.00 for all members of the military (veterans or active duty) and their families. Saturday night is "Stars Wars Night" brought to you by buckeye Cablesystem. Sunday is "Kids Day" with the Walleye featuring a postgame open skate with the Walleye Players hosted by Kiss FM and the River!
