Penguins Complete Weekend Sweep with 5-4 OT Win over Crunch

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Jean-Sebastian Dea lit the lamp at the 3:21 mark of overtime to lift the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 5-4 win over the Syracuse Crunch on Sunday night.

The win gives the Pens (8-5-1-0, 17 points) a clean sweep of their three-game weekend and puts them solely on top of the East Division, while the loss drops the Crunch's record to 5-4-3-0, 13 points.

The goal was Dea's second overtime tally of the season, and puts him tied for first in the American Hockey League.

After a scoreless first frame, Syracuse got on the board first with Dalton Smith tallying his fifth goal of the season at the 2:06 mark. Smith used heavy traffic in front of Penguins' goaltender Eric Hartzell to redirect a Jean-Philippe Cote shot into the back of the net.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton only trailed for two minutes and nineteen seconds before Jayson Megna picked up his first of two goals on the evening. Beau Bennett controlled the puck in Syracuse's zone before finding Andrew Ebbett in the trapezoid. Ebbett lasered a pass to a camped out Megna and he squeaked the puck past Crunch goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy.

The Penguins successfully killed off a Philip Samuelsson interference penalty midway through the second frame. But, as Samuelsson was stepping out of the penalty box, the Crunch took a 2-1 lead when Tanner Richard notched his second goal of the season. Yanni Gourde passed the puck through the crease and found a wide-open Richard who buried it home at 12:24.

The Pens then rattled off three straight goals by Taylor Chorney, Derrick Pouliot and Megna to push their lead to 4-2. Chorney found the back of the net on the power play at 16:11 of the second. Pouliot blasted a shot from the point as Bryan Rust distracted Vasilevskiy. Then Megna and Bennett capitalized on a two-man breakaway at the 5:04 mark of the third.

It looked like Richard's second goal of the night at the 12:07 mark of the third would just be a consolation goal. But Smith then blasted home his second of the night with just under three minutes to go in regulation to force overtime.

Dea finished off the evening by taking a feed from Brian Dumoulin in the slot and picking the upper right hand corner of the Crunch net, to give the Penguins their second OT win of the weekend.

Hartzell picked up his second win of the season while making 24 saves. The loss dropped Vasilevskiy's record in net to 1-2-3 for the year.

The Pens have two home games this weekend when they battle rival Lehigh Valley Friday night at 7:05pm and then host Syracuse Saturday night.
