Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Kitchener Rangers overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period, but fell 5-4 in overtime to the Saginaw Spirit on Sunday. Brandon Robinson potted a pair of goals for the Rangers and Max Iafrate scored and added an assist, extending his point streak to an 11th game.

The teams skated through a scoreless first period until Mitchell Stephens broke the deadlock with 1:43 left in the frame. The sophomore centre picked up the puck near the blueline, and swept a high shot over Rangers starter Matthew Greenfield. Artem Artemov and Luke Cairns picked up the assists on Stephens' fifth of the season.

Each team fired 10 shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes.

The Spirit extended their lead to two goals late in the second period, when Kris Bennett's pass from behind the net found Dylan Sadowy in front of Greenfield. The team scoring leader lifted a quick shot high-blocker side to record his ninth of the season.

Overage defenceman Max Iafrate put Kitchener on the board with 10.5 seconds remaining in the middle frame. Mason Kohn's shot on goal was turned aside by Jake Paterson, but the rebound bounced onto Iafrate's stick near the right faceoff dot. The Livonia, MI native leaned into a heavy shot, finding the back of the net for his fourth of the year. The goal also extended Iafrate's point streak to an 11th straight game. Curtis Meighan earned the second assist on the play.

The Rangers out-shot the Spirit 17-6 in the second period.

Veteran winger Brandon Robinson pulled the Rangers even early in the third period, taking advantage on the power play to record his sixth of the year. The Pickering, ON native jumped on a loose rebound in the crease, pushing it past Paterson for his fifth tally in five games. Justin Bailey added an assist, his team-leading 22nd point of the season, and Iafrate earned his second point of the night with a helper on the goal at 0:58.

Two quick goals put the Spirit up 4-2 with 12 minutes left to play. Nick Moutrey struck first, potting his sixth of the year at 6:56 with an assist from Keaton Middleton. The fourth-year Saginaw winger added an assist less than a minute later on a goal by rookie Tye Felhaber. Jimmy Lodge set up the play, wiring a backhand pass across to the underage centre at the side of the Rangers net.

Robinson's second of the game pulled the Rangers within one, with less than ten minutes remaining. Ryan MacInnis slid a sharp angle pass from the side of the net to the big-bodied winner in the slot and Robinson hammered a shot past Paterson. The assist was MacInnis' sixth point in four games.

With 2:50 left to play and Kitchener on the power play, Frank Hora snapped a point shot past a screened goalie to knot the score at four goals apiece. Logan Schmidt and Brent Pedersen picked up helpers on the American rearguard's second goal of the year.

Kitchener led shots on goal 15-9 in the third and 42-25 through regulation.

Moutrey recorded the game winner for the Spirit 43 seconds into the extra frame, his second goal of the night. Middleton and Lodge each earned their second assist of the night on the tally.

Greenfield made 21 saves for Kitchener in the overtime loss. The Rangers (9-3-2-3) have earned one point in each of their last 12 games, and leapfrog the Owen Sound Attack to take over the third place spot in the Midwest Division.
