Atlanta Gladiators News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The Gladiators (5-3-0-0) pulled off a four-point weekend for the first time since March 2014 with the 4-2 afternoon victory against the South Carolina Stingrays (2-5-0-3), just the team's second road game of the year. Forward Greg Carey scored all four of the Gladiators' goals, and goaltender Mark Guggenberger stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced.

For the second consecutive day, the Gladiators found themselves in an early hole. Joe Devin scored his fourth on the season on a contentious 5-on-3 power play at 17:38 of the first. Defenseman Tristin Llewellyn had his stick slashed out of his hands deep in the Gladiators' end, but despite his protests to referee Tyler Puddifant, play continued with Lewellyn without a stick. Devin was able to take advantage with the one-timer from Guggenberger's right.

And for the second consecutive day, the Gladiators were able to dig themselves out of the hole. Coyotes prospect Greg Carey scored his first goal of the year, and his first ECHL goal at 4:52 of the second period, squeezing one under the legs of Brandon Anderson. Less than three minutes later, Carey notched his second goal off a one-timer in the slot from Garry Nunn and Nathan Burns to give the Gladiators the 2-1 lead.

With two straight goals already under his belt, Carey just needed one more for the ultra-rare natural hat trick, and he got it at 3:13 of the third, off a two-on-one break, from Nathan Burns and Joe Stejskal. The Stingrays would get one back at 6:24 from Garrett Haar to make it 3-2, but it would be too little, too late. After sustained pressure down the stretch, Carey would pocket his fourth of the evening on the empty net goal at 19:17.

The Gladiators will be back on the road in the Palmetto State when they take on the Greenville Road Warriors on Thursday and Friday this week. The next time they will be home will be on Sunday, the 16th for the culmination of the month of "Movember" with the third annual "Stache Bash" against the Florida Everblades.
