Otters Dominate Saginaw 8-1

Erie, Pennsylvania - The Otters stayed perfect at home in an 8-1 victory over Saginaw Saturday night. Dylan Strome and Connor McDavid both tallied four points in the win, and Quentin Maksimovich scored his first goal of the season.

Saginaw had the early lead after Jimmy Lodge picked up the puck all alone in front of Devin Williams and put it in the back of the net 39 seconds in. But with Marcus Crawford in the penalty box for hooking, Darren Raddysh scored his second power play goal of the weekend to tie the game with help from Strome and McDavid, extending point streaks for all three.

The Spirit had a chance shorthanded minutes later as Travis Dermott broke his stick in the offensive zone, but Dermott skated back and made a huge defensive move, dropping in front of the shot to break up the rush. The defensive play continued for both sides, but with exactly one minute left in the first, Alex DeBrincat scored his 19th of the season from McDavid and Trent Fox, giving the Otters a 2-1 lead.

Erie held a chokehold on the second period. After close calls for Artem Artemov and Patrick Fellows, a flurry of shots by the Otters ended in assists for Strome and Dermott and the first goal of the season for Maksimovich and a 3-1 lead for Erie. A minute and a half later, McDavid gave Erie a three-goal lead on a backhand from DeBrincat and Fox. Nick Betz brought the Otters to 5-1, and with the Otters on the power play, Raddysh rounded out the period with his second power play goal of the night.

More close calls for both sides started the third period, but the Otters' offense finished it. Kyle Maksimovich lost the puck on a breakaway, but Travis Wood and Kyle Pettit were right behind. Pettit took a shot, picked up his own rebound, and gave the Otters a 7-1 lead with linemates Wood and Maksimovich getting the assists. Fox nearly had the final goal, but that honor went to Wood with help from Patrick Murphy and Maksimovich, hammering the final nail into the coffin and keeping the Otters perfect at home.

With a goal and an assist in the game, DeBrincat extends his scoring streak to 15 games and holds on to the longest current point streak in the OHL. Strome and McDavid both had four-point nights, while Betz and Raddysh extend their scoring streaks to nine games. Quentin Maksimovich's goal was his first since Jan. 17, 2014 against Kingston.

The Otters host Mississauga at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, before travelling to Niagara on Friday.
