Peoria Rivermen News Release

PEORIA - The Peoria Rivermen captured their second straight win and jumped into second place in the Southern Professional Hockey League with a 5-1 victory on Friday night at Carver Arena.

The Rivermen (3-1-1) struck first just 4:52 into the game when a bouncing puck in front of the Knoxville crease was sent into the twine by Jordan Sims with assists given to Alec Hagaman and Dan Bremner. The Ice Bears (3-1-0) tied the game with 6:42 left in the opening period when Eric Satim skated hard down the slot to slap a rebound home, but Peoria regained a 2-1 lead just 19 seconds later on a tally from the right circle by Alex Hudson helped by Mike Slowikowski.

Peoria earned a 3-1 advantage with 8:55 left in the middle chapter on a thread-the-needle backdoor pass on the run from Jake Trask to Ben Warda, who converted as he tumbled to the ice and into the corner boards. The Rivermen preserved the lead by killing a five-minute power play late in the period, most of which was spent down two men with the imposition of two additional minor penalties.

The Rivermen increased the advantage to 4-1 on a power play rebound goal on a loose puck grabbed by Josh Harris and sent into an open net with assists handed out to Garrett Vermeersch and Cole Ruwe with 14:29 remaining in the third period. Nick Wheeler completed a rush by burying a rebound from Hudson to put the hosts ahead 5-1 with 4:49 left in regulation.

Eric Levine stopped 23 Knoxville shots for the win while Bryan Hince suffered the loss with 29 saves. The Rivermen were 1-of-5 on the power play while the Ice Bears were scoreless in six chances.

The Rivermen return to action in a rematch with the Ice Bears on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. at Carver Arena. The season's first PJ Star Sunday Family Fun Day includes $1 admission for upper bowl seats for all kids 12 and under, plus kids meals (hot dog, chips, drink) for only $3. Inflatables from Fun on the Run, balloon creations from Unique Twist and the Twisting Crew and face painting by Wild Style Design are featured. Sponge Bob Square Pants will appear and fans are invited to skate with the team after the game.
