Earthquakes Forward Tommy Thompson Called to United States U-20 Duty

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose Earthquakes forward Tommy Thompson was among 20 players called to United States U-20 Men's National Team duty by head coach Tab Ramos on Friday as the squad prepares to compete in a U-21 tournament in Spain.

The United States will compete in the 2014 International National Teams Football Tournament in Marbella Spain from Nov. 12-18. They'll open the event with Russia on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 9 a.m. PT. Next up is Ireland on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 6 a.m. PT followed by Canada on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

Thompson, 19, has two caps with the U.S. U-20s. He scored in his debut, a 4-0 win against Bermuda on July 16, and logged 90 minutes in a scoreless draw against Australia on July 18 to help the Americans win the NTC Invitational. The Loomis, Calif. native signed as the club's first Homegrown Player on Jan. 22, 2014 and made 13 appearances in his inaugural season. He also became the second-youngest player in club history to start a game when he took the field in Seattle on Aug. 20, 2014 at 19 years, 5 days old.

The U-20s have a 2-0-2 international record this year, highlighted by their championship run at the 2014 National Training Center Invitational in July. This is the USA's second-to-last international trip of the year. The U-20s will hold a foreign training camp in mid-December in Jamaica, the location of the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. The U.S. will then take part in a domestic camp in late December and early January before the Jan. 9-24 World Cup qualifying tournament in Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The U.S. U-20 MNT was drawn with Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Aruba, Panama and Guatemala in Group A for the CONCACAF U-20 Championship. The USA opens the tournament against Guatemala on Jan. 9 with a goal of qualifying for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
