Wolfe, Syvret collect Aces goals in return home to Sullivan Arena

November 6, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE - Frans Tuohimaa made 40 saves in his ECHL debut and Chase Schaber's second period goal stood as the eventual game winner in a 3-2 Alaska Aces defeat to the Bakersfield Condors on Wednesday at Sullivan Arena.

Corey Syvret and Greg Wolfe netted the Aces goals while Niklas Lundstrom stopped 26 shots, helping boost a late third period comeback sequence that fell short in the final minute after an apparent extra attacker goal by Olivier Archambault was waved off with 1:53 left in regulation.

Bakersfield, who collected their sixth win of the season, scored three unanswered goals in the first matchup between the two teams at Sullivan Arena since Game 6 of last season's Western Conference Final.

Syvret lifted the Aces to a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season at 6:53, off the rush while finishing a feed into the slot by Zach Pochiro. Brendan Nash's first goal in a Bakersfield uniform leveled the game, 1-1 on a wrister from the left circle.

Both Lundstrom and Tuohimaa faced a heavy workload in the first period with Lundstrom coming up with 16 saves. Tuohimaa denied Justin Johnson on a wide-open chance late in the period, getting his right pad on Johnson's backhanded deke.

Wolfe followed up with wrister ticketed for the upper corner in the second period that Tuohimaa stopped with his glove and Bakersfield continued their rally with two goals in the middle frame. Kellen Jones finished a give-and-go play at the right post at 6:27 for a 2-1 edge.

A scrap between Jacob Doty and Gabriel Verpaelst, followed by two close looks at the Bakersfield net helped the Aces threaten, but a counterattack by Francis Verreault-Paul enabled a centering pass to Schaber, who converted the ricochet past Lundstrom for a 3-1 lead at 11:55.

The Aces pounded the Bakersfield net with an 18-4 shots advantage, even amidst a third period that included three minor penalties. Wolfe extended his goal scoring streak to three straight games on a second-chance rebound at the net with 2:57 left in regulation, and the Aces followed by swarming the offensive zone on every shift that followed.

Archambault headlined the biggest chance to tie the game when he jabbed at a rebound with 1:53 left that slipped by Tuohimaa and into the net, but the play was waved off by the officials.

The Aces outshot Bakersfield, 42-29 in the game, marking 169 shots combined in the last four games.

NOTES: The Aces scratched Dustin Molle, Justin Breton, Ross Ring-Jarvi, Tyler Currier, Bryan Cameron and newly acquired center Andy Bathgate ... Justin Johnson, who helped generate the game opening goal, collected his first point of the season ... the Aces penalty kill held Bakersfield to an 0-of-5 clip on the power play.

The two teams meet again in a rematch on Friday, at 7:15 p.m. (GCI/KFQD) from Sullivan Arena.
