Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON (Wednesday, November 5, 2014) - A new athlete competition feature debuted last month on ESPN FC across the ESPN family ofnetworks. Houston Dynamo forward Giles Barnes will compete to win a Lamborghini in an episode airing Sunday, November 9. "What'Cha Got" presented by Continental Tire features professional race car driver Townsend Bell hosting six athletes from six different Major League Soccer (MLS) teams:
October 19: Chandler Hoffman, 24, Forward, LA Galaxy
October 26: Sean Johnson, 25, Goalkeeper, Chicago Fire
November 2: Stephen Keel, 31, Defender, FC Dallas
November 9: Giles Barnes, 26, Forward, Houston Dynamo
November 16: Dan Kennedy, 32, Goalkeeper, Chivas USA November 23: Graham Zusi, 28, Midfielder, Sporting KC
December 7: FINAL, The Fastest East versus The Fastest West
Racing and soccer may seem like opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to sports but they do have a few things in common including speed, reaction time and skill. What happens when six MLS players trade their boots for tires and get behind the wheel of a 600 horsepower Lamborghini? With instruction from sportscar and Indy 500 racer, Townsend Bell, their competitive edge comes out in the new show, "What'Cha Got" presented by Continental Tire.
"It was fun being out there zipping around," Barnes said of the experience. "A little bit of a challenge for me because I was on the wet track day, but it was a good experience and I enjoyed kicking it with Townsend."
The weekly show features six top MLS players swapping their daily driver for a turn behind the wheel of a Lamborghini. Giles Barnes puts his best foot forward to make it through a coned, autocross course in the parking lot of Toyota Park, home of the Chicago Fire, as fast as possible. Barnes competes with two other Eastern conference players to compete against the fastest Western conference player in Chicago. The fastest time wins a year-long lease of the Lamborghini.
"We are happy to launch our first season with Major League Soccer and Continental Tire," says Townsend Bell. "It was a great experience to share my racing passion with these athletes. I'm excited for soccer fans as they watch some of the best athletes in the sport take on the challenge of driving at the limit. With a supercar on the line for the fastest driver, they really go for it."
Barnes will go against Chicago Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson in "What'Cha Got" presented by Continental Tire airing on Sunday, November 9 at 11 p.m. EST on ESPN2 during the ESPN FC television program. Every Sunday What'Cha Got will feature a different player with the finale airing on December 7, the evening of the 2014 MLS Cup. Each episode will give fans a peek inside the player's personal garage and highlights from each player's time at the track. The final episode will feature the fastest player from the East and the West squaring off in Chicago for the grand prize.
