Mavs Deal Oilers First Home Regulation Loss

November 4, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release

TULSA, OK - A frantic comeback bid fell short for the Tulsa Oilers on Tuesday night in a 5-4 setback to the Missouri Mavericks in front of 3,202 at the BOK Center. Mavericks forward Jared Brown restored the visitors lead at 5:45 of the final frame with his first goal of the season and what proved to be the game-winner. The Oilers fell to 3-2-1 overall and lost in regulation for the first time on their own ice. Tulsa was edged by Missouri for the second time in five days with both defeats coming by just a single goal.

The Oilers opened the scoring with an early power play goal off the stick of T.J. Caig. Rookie forward Jeff Jubinville slid a pass through the Missouri crease to a driving Caig who chipped a shot past a sprawling John Griggs for his fifth tally of the season. Former Central Hockey League MVP Sebastien Thinel leveled the contest at 1-1 at 11:03 of the first period with a shot that trickled through the legs of Tulsa netminder Kevin Carr. The two sides combined for nine penalties in the opening 20 minutes and each team enjoyed a 5-on-3 advantage.

Lindsay Sparks, playing in just his second game as a Maverick, gave his club its first lead of the night at 7:02 of the second. Just 90 seconds later, Adam Pleskach, who recorded a hat-trick against Missouri last Friday, flung a shot from against the boards that beat Griggs on the short side to even the score at 2-2. Sparks wasted no time in restoring the Mavericks' advantage. The speedy forward darted into the Oilers slot and wristed a shot over the shoulder of Carr for his second goal of the period and second goal in the span of only 2:18. Missouri padded its lead at 14:44 when David Rutherford scooped up his own rebound and lifted a backhand into the upper corner of the net. The Mavericks outshot the Oilers 11-8 in the middle period and headed into the third with a 4-2 advantage.

In the opening minute of the third, Mavericks forward Brandon Hynes missed a breakaway attempt and the Oilers counter attack was able to capitalize. Scott Macaulay fed Pleskach who slammed home his second goal of the night and league-leading ninth goal of the season. With only 43 seconds off the clock, the Oilers trailed by just one. At 3:56, defenseman Dave Pszenyczny, playing against his former team, located a loose puck and rifled it past Griggs for the game-tying goal. The Oilers elation was short-lived as Missouri followed with a strong shift that resulted in Brown teeing up a slap shot from on top of the far face off circle. The shot traveled through traffic in front of Carr and found its way into the back of net to give the Mavericks a 5-4 lead. For the final 1:26 of regulation, the Oilers played with an empty net but couldn't direct a shot past Griggs.

Missouri has won six straight games in Tulsa and holds a 2-0 season series edge over the Oilers. The Mavericks, who had only scored a total of nine goals in their first four games, managed five goals on Tuesday in just 24 shots. Macaulay led the Oilers offensive attack with three assists while Pleskach recorded his fourth multi-point game of the season. Sparks and Brown each finished the evening with three points and Griggs earned his first victory as a Maverick with 22 saves on 26 shots.

The Oilers went 1-1-1 over the recent three-game home stand and are back in action on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in Allen.
