Kansas City Mavericks News Release

Tulsa, OK - It was a Happy Halloween for the Missouri Mavericks who battled their way past the Tulsa Oilers on Friday night with a 4-3 overtime victory. The win marks the first of the season for the Mavs as they start their 2014-15 campaign with five straight games away from home.

"I was very pleased with the effort and the result," said Mavs Head Coach Richard Matvichuk. "We were all over them for extended periods of the game and minimized the mistakes much better than we did last weekend."

David Rutherford and Martin Lee each scored a pair of goals pacing the Mavs who saw a one-goal lead vanish in the game's final minute. It was Lee's second of the night that served as the game winner coming on the power play at the 4:22 mark of the overtime period.

Lee was acquired by the Mavericks earlier in the week in a trade with Cincinnati and he made his debut a memorable one scoring a pair of power play goals, one in the third period and the winner in OT.

"Martin (Lee) is a proven player and he did it all tonight," said Matvichuk. "He blocked shots, played very well in front of his net and obviously, his one timer from the point is very good."

Rutherford finished the night with three points adding an assist to his two strikes.

Adam Pleskach was the offense for the Oilers scoring a hat trick and sitting now with seven goals in four games on the season.

The Mavericks special teams were much improved from their opening two games as they scored a pair of power play goals in six chances (entered the game 0 for 10 on the season) and they served only 11 minutes in the penalty box after averaging 33 minutes through the first two games of the season.

"Our captains talked about discipline and staying out of the box prior to the game," said Matvichuk. "We were much better in that area tonight and our entire team did a great job."

Garett Bembridge (3 assists) and Sebastien Thinel (2 assists) each helped dish the puck around with Rutherford and Lee capitalizing on their chances.

Mike Clemente earned the win evening his record at one win and one loss on the season. He finished with 24 saves and was especially sharp in the second period where he turned away 11 of 12 shots.

Missouri is back in action on Saturday night when they visit the Wichita Thunder (1-1-1-0).
