Cleveland Monsters News Release

In the first of back-to-back meetings, the Lake Erie Monsters (3-4-0-1) were led to a 5-2 victory over the Texas Stars (4-2-1-0) by five different goal scorers and 31 saves by goalie Calvin Pickard Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena. Paul Carey, Trevor Cheek, Stefan Elliott, Karl Stollery, and Kenny Ryan scored for the Monsters, who host Texas Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Pickard started his third straight game for the Monsters, stopping over 30 shots for the third time this season.

Paul Carey opened the scoring for the Monsters at 2:15 of the first period when he redirected a Stefan Elliott point shot on a five-on-three power play, giving the Monsters a 1-0 lead. Colin Smith also assisted on Carey's third goal of the season. Trevor Cheek extended the Monsters lead to 2-0 with 19 seconds left in the first period when he drove to the net after a faceoff and slipped a puck past Texas goalie Jussi Rynnas. Joey Hishon assisted on Cheek's first goal of the season.

With the Monsters on the penalty kill, Stefan Elliott took a pass from Michael Schumacher on a shorthanded rush up the ice and fired a shot top-shelf past Rynnas from the top of the right circle to stretch the Monsters lead to 3-0 at 1:25 of the second period; the goal was the second of the season for Elliott. Just under four minutes later, Karl Stollery scored on a shot from beyond the top of the left circle that ended the night early for Rynnas, who allowed four goals on 20 shots in the Texas net. Stollery's third goal of the season was assisted by Carey. Max Fortunus netted a power play goal for the Stars at 7:40 of the second period, cutting the Monsters lead to 4-1.

Each team struck for a goal in the third period. Derek Meech scored from the left circle at 13:07 of the third period to pull Texas to within a pair of goals, but Kenny Ryan scored an empty-net goal for the Monsters at 18:13 of the final period to make the score 5-2.

Pickard (2-2-1) stopped 31 of 33 shots for his second win. Rynnas is 2-1-1 after stopping 16 of 20 in 25:23 of action and taking the loss. In relief, Jack Campbell stopped 12 of 12 shots for Texas.
