Whataburger Field: a 2015 "Great Park"

Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Whataburger Field won a Baseball America Facebook poll to be named one of 12 minor league baseball stadiums showcased in the publication's 2015 Great Parks calendar. The calendar can be purchased here beginning in November.

The Hooks' home field, completed in 2005 for $25 million, occupies a space formerly dominated by cotton warehouses at the Port of Corpus Christi. Its architectural attributes, from mammoth wood beams to corrugated siding, pay tribute to the site's heritage. The scoreboard in left-center field is framed by antique cotton presses, one which dates to the 1920s.

The newest feature to Whataburger Field is a 979 square foot video board, which debuted in 2014. The structure is 20'7.2" high and 48' wide and consists of nearly 20,000 LED lights, which are 15 millimeters apart. If strung together the lights would consist of 3,800 feet of Christmas lights.

During games, large oceangoing vessels and their tiny tugboat escorts navigate the port's ship channel, which runs behind the stadium compound. Ships clear the iconic Harbor Bridge (1959), a magnificent span for Highway 181, before churning out to the Gulf of Mexico through Corpus Christi Bay.

Whataburger Field also includes (what else?) a Whataburger restaurant, where fans get their favorite fare from the chain, which originated in Corpus Christi.
