CFL Partners with Football Canada on Safe Contact Program

TORONTO - The Canadian Football League announced today that it has partnered with Football Canada's Safe Contact program.
An integral part of Football Canada's National Coaching Certification Program, Safe Contact teaches safe tackling and blocking techniques along with safety education and awareness.
"The game of football has tremendous benefits for youth, but like any sport, it's important that our amateur coaches are teaching our children how to play the game safely," said Kevin McDonald, CFL Vice-President, Football Operations. "The Safe Contact program teaches coaches the fundamentals while also providing parents of young football players assurances that their children are coached with safety as a number one priority."
The Safe Contact program is available across the country. Parents and coaches can learn more by visiting www.safecontact.ca . As part of the partnership, the CFL and Football Canada are launching a 30-second PSA tonight on TSN to help raise awareness and encourage enrollment in the program.
"If you are involved in amateur football, we strongly encourage you to enroll in the Safe Contact program," McDonald added. "Sports are a very rewarding experience for youth. Let's work together to make that experience as safe as possible."
In addition to training coaches through the Safe Contact program, once certain criteria are met, entire football associations can be certified as Safe Contact Associations. In order to become a Safe Contact Association, your organization must meet the following criteria:
- Have a trained NCCP Learning Facilitator
- Have a trained NCCP Evaluator
- Have all coaches Football Canada Safe Contact trained
- Have coaches actively teaching Safe Contact including a Safe Contact fundamental practice at the start of every season
