Americans Announce 2014 'Movember' Plans

KENNEWICK, WA - The Tri-City Americans, in partnership with the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation, announced today its 2014 Movember Campaign plans.

Last year, the Americans hosted the first 'Aware Down There' event, in honor of Americans' Alum Shaun Vey, who was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer in February of 2013. This year, the event will be a month long Movember movement, with players growing mustaches to raise awareness and funds for the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation.

This season, the team will be divided into four different Movember groups. Fans will then have the opportunity to donate funds to the team they think will have the most amount of facial hair by the end of November. Americans staff will take pictures of the teams at the end of the month and decide which team is the winner.

Fans can donate to the cause in different ways. Starting Nov. 1, anyone can visit the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation's online donation site and contribute to the team they think will win. Fans can also stop by and donate at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation's table at the following Americans' home games in November:

- Wednesday, November 5 vs. Edmonton Oil Kings

- Friday, November 14 vs. Victoria Royals

- Saturday, November 29 vs. Portland Winterhawks

Everyone that donates to the Americans' Movember campaign, both in-arena and online, will be entered into a drawing to win an autographed Montreal Canadiens goalie stick, signed by Olympic Gold Medalist, NHL All-Star, and Americans Alum Carey Price. As further incentive, one lucky donor who contributed to the winning team will win the chance to have lunch with this year's winning Movember team.

About Shaun Vey A five-year WHL veteran, with nearly four of those years in Tri-City, Shaun was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer in February of 2013. After discovering an abnormality following a men's league hockey game, Shaun's wife, Robyn, encouraged him to go to the doctor. Following several tests, the diagnosis was confirmed and Shaun was treated. Now cancer-free, Shaun has become a strong voice for the need to increase awareness for male cancers, with his Relay For Life team in Saskatoon raising nearly $15,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society this summer.

"Listen up men! You have to check yourself. If you wait until you feel sick, it is most likely late stage, which limits treatment options," explained Vey. "It is OK to talk about it. This is the message I want people to take away...men need to talk about this disease and I want to use my experience to help people and to raise awareness."

About Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men between the ages of 15 and 35. It starts as an abnormal growth or tumor that develops in one or both testicles. It is a highly treatable type of cancer with a very good cure rate (about 95%) if found and treated early.

- About 8,820 new cases of testicular cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2014.

- Because treatment is so successful, the risk of dying from this cancer is very low: about 1 in 5,000.

- About 380 men will die from testicular cancer in 2014.

- A man's lifetime chance of having testicular cancer is about 1 in 270.
