Frimpong's Brace, Nicht's Record Shutout Streak Highlight Week 16 International Performances
October 28, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL) News Release
NEW YORK (October 28, 2014) - Several international players turned in impressive performances in Week 16 of the North American Soccer League (NASL) Fall Season, and headlining the list was Tampa Bay Rowdies midfielder Evans Frimpong and Indy Eleven goalkeeper Kristian Nicht.
Frimpong, a native of Ghana, netted his first two goals of the season in the Rowdies' 2-2 draw against the New York Cosmos on Saturday - the second of which came in second-half stoppage time to earn a dramatic point for the visitors. Frimpong's second goal cancelled out a spectacular free kick goal from Spanish midfielder Marcos Senna.
German goalkeeper Nicht set a NASL Modern Era record by going 397 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal. He was on the verge of his fourth straight clean sheet when Ottawa Fury FC forward Oliver found the corner of the net with a header in the final minutes of Indy Eleven's 2-1 win at TD Place. Nicht's 397-minute streak broke the previous record of 372 minutes, which was held by the New York Cosmos.
Oliver wasn't the only Brazilian to find the net in Sunday's game at TD Place. Jhulliam, who is a native of Bahia, scored Indy Eleven's first goal, helping his team pick up its third straight victory.
Midfielders Cesar Elizondo (Costa Rica) and Pecka (Brazil) and forward Nacho Novo (Spain) all scored key goals for their respective teams on Saturday. Elizondo notched the game-winner for the San Antonio Scorpions as they ended Minnesota United FC's 13-game home unbeaten streak with a 1-0 triumph at NSC Stadium.
Novo scored the Carolina RailHawks' second goal on Saturday, finding the net with a penalty kick in his team's 2-0 road win over the Atlanta Silverbacks. Pecka, who was named NASL Player of the Week on Monday, scored the game-winning tally for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in their 1-0 victory over visiting FC Edmonton at Lockhart Stadium.
Every week throughout the 2014 Season, the NASL puts its international stars - both coaches & players - under the 'NASL International Spotlight,' which focuses on the league's overseas connections.
