SaberCats Continue to Add in Free Agency

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose SaberCats announced today that they have been assigned quarterback Brett Smith, wide receivers DJ Woods and Kendrick Wiggins, offensive lineman Jasen Carlson and defensive lineman LT Tuipulotu (too-ee-poo-lo-too) in free agency.

"This is a group of young players with a lot of potential," said Owner and Head Coach Darren Arbet. "We are excited to see how their skill sets will translate to the Arena game."

Smith (6-2, 210, Wyoming) is a rookie to the Arena Football League. He was one of the most prolific players in Wyoming history, setting school records in career offensive yards (10,390), career touchdowns (97) and career passing touchdowns (76). Smith also set the Wyoming and Mountain West Conference record with 640 total yards in a single game. As an undrafted free agent in 2014, he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League, and the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.

Woods (5-11, 190, Cincinatti) has one year of AFL experience, having appeared in four games for the Chicago Rush in 2013. During those four contests, he notched 19 receptions for 232 yards and four touchdowns. During his four-year career at Cincinnati, Woods appeared in 51 contests with 35 starts. As a Bearcat, he totaled 159 receptions for 2,156 yards and 14 touchdowns. Woods also excelled on special teams, where he returned 45 punts for 375 yards and 33 kickoffs for 751 yards. He signed with the Tennessee Titans of the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2012, and more recently spent time with the Ottawa Redblacks of the CFL.

Wiggins (5-11, 190, East Carolina) is a rookie to the AFL. As an undrafted free agent this summer, he signed with the New England Patriots of the NFL. During his college career at East Carolina University, Wiggins notched 80 receptions for 1,012 yards and eight touchdowns. For his efforts during his senior season, he was named All-Conference USA honorable mention.

Carlson (6-2, 305, Buffalo) is also a rookie to the Arena Football League. He played four seasons for Buffalo, earning All-MAC First-Team Offensive Lineman Honors as a senior. As an undrafted free agent in 2014, Carlson was invited to the Chicago Bears rookie camp.

Tuipolutu (6-1, 305, Utah) is a rookie to the AFL. This summer, he signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent. Over the course of his career for the Utah Utes, Tuipolutu appeared in 25 games, recording 50 total tackles to go with one-and-a-half sacks, four pass breakups, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries.
