Trout End the Drought

Mississauga Steelheads News Release

Mississauga, ON - After nearly two weeks on the road, the Mississauga Steelheads returned home to the Hershey Centre to host the Saginaw Spirit. Spencer Martin made his second start in as many days, as he and the Trout took on Mississauga native, Jake Paterson and the Saginaw Spirit. This is the first of two matchups against the Spirit this season, and the only one in Mississauga.

The Steelheads started strong in this game, holding much of the play in the offensive zone through the first five minutes. Mississauga would find themselves with a pair of power play opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on either. Martin stood tall early on as Saginaw were held without a shot through the first 12 minutes of the period; the Steelheads held a 14-0 lead in shots. On just their fourth shot of the game, however, the Spirit would be the first to find the scoreboard. Saginaw's Jimmy Lodge netted a shot from the point, as Martin was screened on the play. Jacob Ringuette tallied the lone assist. Mississauga took a late penalty and were forced to finish the period a man down. The Trout had a commanding 18-5 lead in the shots department through the first 20 minutes.

As the second period began, with tensions rising, Nick Zottl dropped the mits with Saginaw's Nick Moutrey after a few after-the-whistle scrums. The Steelheads, continuing to push the pace of play, sprung Jesse Barwell on a partial break, but Paterson was there to make the glove save. Minutes later, Mikey McLeod scored his first OHL goal in spectacular fashion, deking around defenceman Sean Callaghan before tucking it in Paterson's five-hole. Nathan Bastian recorded the assist. After two power plays had come and gone, the Trout found themselves on the penalty kill. Bryson Cianfrone intercepted a pass and was off to the races on a breakaway, however he was hauled down and awarded a penalty shot. Showing excellent stick-handling, Cianfrone beat Paterson, but not the skinny red defender as he couldn't stuff it inside the post. Just past the midway point in the frame, Lodge tipped in a Callaghan point shot into the back of the net. His second of the game would give Saginaw their second lead of the game. Shots after forty minutes are 32-20 in favour of the Steelheads.

Just a minute into the third, Cianfrone fed Lucas Venuto in the slot who seemed to put it just inside the crossbar. The goal was under review, and the call was reversed. Five minutes into the frame, the Steelheads found themselves on the penalty kill. Halfway through the kill, the Trout managed an odd-man rush. Cianfrone fed a beautiful pass to Sam Babintsev who buried his third goal in two games to tie the score. With just under three minutes to go, Cianfrone worked his way into the offensive zone, fed Devlin on the point who buried his fifth of the season over the blocker of Paterson to take the lead. Babintsev tallied the other assist. Nathan Bastian iced the game with an empty-net goal fired from his own blue line. The Steelheads scored three third period goals, earning their first franchise victory over Saginaw.

The Steelheads travel to Peterborough on Thursday, October 30th before returning home on Friday, October 31st for their Halloween Game. Tickets for Friday's game are only $5.00 +HST for kids and students under 18. Fan are encouraged to dress up as there will be Trick-or-Treating on the concourse and great prizes for best costumes!
