Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi RiverKings allowed three goals in the second period and lost to the Pensacola Ice Flyers, 3-2, Friday night in their season opener at the Landers Center.
The RiverKings took the lead 4:45 into the first period as Burke Gallimore converted on a pass from Dylan Quaile for a 1-0 lead. Gallimore started the play with a hit in the right wing corner to cause a turnover. Quaile then skated in to the right circle and centered one for Gallimore, who one-timed it for the lead.
That lead lasted until the early stages of the second period, when Steve Bergin cashed in on a loose puck in the crease to even the game at one. Later in the second period, Adam Pawlick found a loose puck in the left wing circle and ripped a quick shot past Adam Courchaine to give the Ice Flyers a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal with 8:32 left in the second.
The RiverKings responded just 1:19 later when Matt Whitehead took a pass from Cody Dion, went one-on-one down the left side, and snapped a shot under the crossbar to tie the game at two with 7:13 remaining in the second period. Less than four minutes later Pawlick scored his second of the game on another loose puck with 3:46 to go in the frame for a 3-2 Pensacola lead.
The RiverKings generated 11 shots in the third period, but didn't pot the equalizer and the Ice Flyers held on for a 3-2 win.
The RiverKings finish of their home-opening weekend against the Knoxville Ice Bears at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night. Groups of 15 or more who purchase tickets will receive complimentary tickets to a future RiverKings home game. For more information, visit riverkings.com or call 662-342-1755.
