Erie Otters News Release

Sudbury, Ontario - The Otters continued their winning streak with an 8-1 victory over the Sudbury Wolves Saturday night on the road, advancing to 10-0-0-1 on the season. Seven Otters combined for multi-point nights, and Mason Marchment had his first multi-goal OHL game in the win.

Erie's top-rated power play unit started off the night four and a half minutes in with Jonathon Masters called for roughing. Alex DeBrincat put a one-timer on Troy Timpano and, with the puck on the goal line, Dylan Strome poked it into the net for the 1-0 lead just over a minute into the man advantage, Connor McDavid picking up the secondary assist.

Timpano made a flurry of saves on the Otters around the halfway mark of the period before a shot from Nick Baptiste hit the netting, falling into the goal, and was waved off. With 27 seconds to go in the period, Strome passed the puck across the crease to Taylor Raddysh, who took the shot behind Timpano for the 2-0 lead.

Thirty seconds into the second period, McDavid left a drop pass for Patrick Murphy who took the shot for his second goal of the season. Shaun Bily was sent off with a 10-minute misconduct before Marchment carried the puck into the offensive zone, fought through four opportunities by the Sudbury defenders, and put the puck into the back of the net. Nick Betz picked up his 12th point in six games on the goal.

Michael Pezzetta was called for interference on McDavid at 6:29. Timpano lost his stick and, unable to retrieve it, played with a defenseman's stick during the power play. With just over 20 seconds to go on the man-advantage, Travis Dermott scored his first of the season from Troy Donnay and McDavid, giving the Otters a 5-0 lead and keeping the Erie power play perfect for the night. Dermott's goal was the end of the night for Timpano, who was pulled in favor of Samuel Tanguay.

McDavid and Dermott switched roles on the Otters sixth goal with Dermott picking up the assist after a long pass to McDavid, who skated in alone on a breakaway and found the back of the net from the corner. Pezzetta dropped the gloves with Jesse Saban after a hit left Pezzetta looking for momentum for the Wolves. Despite Sudbury getting the puck on Daniel Dekoning's net, the final goal of the period belonged to Marchment after he redirected a shot by Raddysh, giving the Otters a 7-0 lead heading into the third.

Sudbury brought a new intensity to their game to start the third period. With Kyle Capobianco, Pavel Jenys, and Matt Schmalz in front of the net, Schmalz was able to get the puck behind Dekoning to end the Erie shutout. The Wolves continued to pressure Dekoning, nearly scoring before the net was knocked loose and the goal was waved off. With no penalties, play went on until the 15:44 mark when Kyle Pettit picked up a rebound from Kyle Maksimovich and backhanded it behind Tanguay for the 8-1 final. Trent Fox was awarded with the secondary assist to close out the game.

The Otters are the only team in the Ontario Hockey League that has not lost a game in regulation. Strome and McDavid continue on their point streaks, both at 12 games. Murphy's goal extends his point streak to three games and his 10 points are just under half of his total career points. DeBrincat now has at least a point in the last ten games, and Donnay's nine total points have already made this at least his second-best OHL season. The win is the third for Dekoning in his third OHL start.

Erie heads home to host the Plymouth Whalers Thursday night at 7 p.m. before taking a day off and welcoming Ottawa on Saturday.
