New England Revolution News Release

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Lee Nguyen was voted the 2014 New England Revolution Santander Most Valuable Player, winning the award with a record fan vote percentage. The winner of the MVP award, as well as the rest of the Revolution's 2014 team awards, were announced by the team before tonight's regular-season finale against Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium.

The 2014 Revolution Team Awards:

Santander Most Valuable Player - Lee Nguyen Defender of the Year - A.J. Soares Humanitarian of the Year - Kelyn Rowe UnitedHealthcare Youth Player of the Year - Zachary Herivaux (Under-18s) Players' Player of the Year - A.J. Soares Golden Boot Award - Lee Nguyen

The Santander MVP award was determined by fan vote, while the defender of the year award was determined by media vote. The humanitarian award was chosen by the Revolution community relations staff and team executives based on players' community activities throughout the year. The UnitedHealthcare youth player of the year was chosen by the Revolution Academy technical staff, and the Golden Boot went to the team's leading goal-scorer this season.

Santander Most Valuable Player: Lee Nguyen

Lee Nguyen, 28, is enjoying a break-out campaign this year, leading the Revolution in scoring with a career-high 17 goals with one regular-season game to play. Nguyen, who is also garnering significant consideration for MLS MVP, has paced the Revolution in this his third season with the club. His 17 goals are tied for fourth in MLS, and his eight game-winning goals lead the league. Nguyen has also added five assists this year and has factored in 49 percent of the goals the team has scored this year. He received a vote on a 95 percent of all fan ballots, including a record 86 percent of first-place votes. This is his second Revolution MVP award, also having won it in 2012.

Defender of the Year: A.J. Soares

A.J. Soares, 25, has been a mainstay on the Revolution's backline this season. He has started all 31 regular-season games in which he's played so far, and leads all defenders with two goals and one assist. Defensively, Soares' presence in the backline resulted in a team goals against average 1.55 lower than when he wasn't, as well as 3.5 shots per game less. Soares started at center back in all seven of the team's defensive shutouts.

Humanitarian of the Year: Kelyn Rowe

Kelyn Rowe, 22, has spent 2014 promoting childhood cancer awareness in the region as an ambassador for the Jessie Rees Foundation, also known as Team NEGU ("Never Ever Give Up"). He has made multiple hospital visits around the Boston area, shot and distributed his own public service announcement, has been active on social media promoting the organization and hosted a game day experience for patient families at Gillette Stadium. In addition to his work with team NEGU, Rowe has volunteered extensively with the team's charitable and philanthropic activities, including additional hospital visits and fundraising events.

UnitedHealthcare Youth Player of the Year: Zachary Herivaux

Zach Herivaux, 18, has been the Revolution Academy's most influential player the last two seasons, but demonstrated his versatility in 2013-14. A natural box-to-box central midfielder, his athleticism, technical ability and mentality were a driving force behind the U18's success as they advanced to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs in 2013-14. Last season, he moved from central midfield to central defense after the 2013 Winter Showcase, and helped spur the U18s to a 12-2-0 record in the final 14 games of the season. The defensive unit conceded only seven goals in that stretch, and Herivaux helped lead the U18's to second-place in the USSDA Northeast Division. In addition to his play with the Under-18s, Herivaux has also spent considerable time with the Revolution first team, traveling with the club to Tucson, Arizona, for preseason training in February 2014, and spending considerable training time with the squad during the season. This is the first season that the UnitedHealthcare Youth Player of the Year award has been presented.

Players' Player of the Year: A.J. Soares

A.J. Soares was voted by his teammates as the inaugural Players' Player of the Year this season. As a veteran on a young team, Soares has been a consistent leader on and off the field. Now in his fourth season as a backline anchor, Soares was determined by his teammates as "the player who best typifies what it means to be a Revolution player, both on and off the field." In addition to his central defense duties, Soares twice this season moved up to the central midfield in two games when the team needed additional bodies in the position. His two goals are tops on the team among defenders.

Golden Boot: Lee Nguyen

Lee Nguyen won the Revolution Golden Boot Award as the club's top goal scorer. His 17 goals entering tonight's game are 12 more than the next two closest players - Diego Fagundez and Kelyn Rowe - who each have five. This is Nguyen's first team Golden Boot Award. He enters the final weekend in the regular season tied with Seattle's Obafemi Martins for fourth in MLS in goals. This is the first time the Revolution Golden Boot Award has been presented since 2010.
