Regina Pats News Release

Regina, Saskatchewan - The Regina Pats (5-7-1-0) and Swift Current Broncos (8-7-0-1) met up for the first time this season with the Broncos taking the opening contest 3-1.

First Period

It was no surprise to see the Pats and Broncos get into the rough stuff early in the contest. After a few solid hits to open the game, Pavel Padakin and Tanner LeSann dropped the gloves in an early tilt. The scoring got going when Jake DeBrusk got a hold of the puck in front of the Pats goal and sent it past Daniel Wapple after a couple of tries. The Pats earned a late powerplay opportunity and after coming up empty on their first chance, cashed in to even up the game. Braden Christoffer fished the puck out of the corner and slid it to Morgan Klimchuk who fired a pass cross-ice to Sam Steel and the rookie finished the play to send the game to the first intermission tied 1-1. Shots on goal favoured the Broncos, 14-11.

Second Period

A late first period penalty to Colby Williams set the Broncos up with their first powerplay opportunity of the night and they didn't squander it. Some good passing around the zone ended up with Carter Rigby who bombed a one-timer into the goal for a 2-1 Swift Current lead. The Pats nearly tied the game when Sam Steel got himself free in front, but was foiled. Then Connor Gay followed up with a great chance, but was turned away by Landon Bow. The rebound came to Colby Williams who fired, but Bow fell back and stopped the try with his trapper in a great save. The Broncos helped out their netminder by adding some insurance, again on the powerplay. Brett Lernout ripped a point shot that squeaked by Wapple and Coda Gordon pounced on the loose puck for a 3-1 Swift Current lead after forty. The Broncos also led the shots 28-22 after the second.

Third Period

Looking to get back into the contest, the Pats jumped out in the third with a 6-1 edge in the shots through the first half of the frame. Despite the lopsided shots, the Blue and White couldn't find a tying marker. Regina continued to press through the final ten minutes, but couldn't break through Landon Bow and the Bronco defence. The Pats outshot Swift Current 12-3 in the final period, to lead in the shot count 33-32 through sixty minutes.

The Pats return home tomorrow for Breast Cancer Awareness Night, a 7 p.m. game against the Broncos. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.ca, the Brandt Centre Box Office and Regina Safeway locations.
