Pirates Suffer Fourth Loss of Season in Manchester

Manchester, N.H. - The Portland Pirates (1-4-0-0) had their fourth straight loss of the season by a tally of 5- 2 on Friday night when they took on the Monarchs (3-1-0-0) at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H. The Monarchs put up two goals in the first frame of action and the Pirates spent the rest of the game unsuccessfully attempting to even the score.

The game was the first of the 2014-2015 VIP Cup Series presented by VIP Tires and Service.

The first Monarchs goal came at 4:43 on a power play when Brian O'Neill got a shot past Portland goalie Mike McKenna for his third tally of the year. Jordan Weal and Sean Backman were credited with the assists on the goal. The Monarchs notched a second goal at 13:49 scored by Nick Ebert, his first of the year. The second goal was assisted by Weal and O'Neill. The Pirates were aggressive in the first owning a 13-6 shots on goal advantage, however, were unable to convert.

The Monarchs tacked on a third goal at 1:12 in the second period when Justin Auger found the back of the net for his first score of the season. The assists on the goal were from Nick Shore and Michael Mersch. A fourth goal was scored by the Monarchs when Jeff Schultz found the back of the net at 13:38. The goal was Schultz's second of the season, assisted by Shore and Backman. The Pirates countered back with a goal of their own by Alex Bolduc at 16:54. Bolduc's third tally of the year was assisted by Dylan Reese and goal tender Mike McKenna. The Pirates continued their aggressive play and held a shots on goal advantage of 9-8 for the period.

The Pirates continued to attempt their come back in the third period but ended up unsuccessful. The first tally of the third period came on Sean Backman's first goal of the season for the Monarchs at 11:13. Assists on the Backman goal were credited to Vincent Loverde and Jordan Weal. The Pirates countered back quickly on goal number two of the season for Lucas Lessio at 11:44. Lessio's goal was assisted by Bolduc and Tobias Reider. A mere 31 seconds passed between the alternating scores. The rest of the period was scoreless and the Monarchs were able complete their win untouched. Mike McKenna (1-3-0) got his fourth start of the season, letting in five goals and saving 23. Jean-Francois Berube (2-1-0) was in net for the Monarchs and saved 31, allowing two goals.

The Pirates return home tomorrow night, Saturday October 25, 2014 to the Cross Insurance Arena for a 7:00 PM match up with the Syracuse Crunch. The Pirates then hit the road the following day, Sunday October 26, 2014 traveling to Worcester for a 3:00 PM game with the Sharks.
