Match Preview: San Antonio Scorpions at Minnesota United FC

October 24, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL) - San Antonio Scorpions News Release

There are two games remaining in the regular season and for the Scorpions, there is still much to play for. A win by San Antonio would not only pull the club within two points of Minnesota in the Fall Season standings, it would also secure the #2 seed in The Championship and a semifinal match at Toyota Field on November 8.

The Alamo City boys have had hard luck in two previous matchups this season with the Loons as they fell 2-0 each time in San Antonio. But very curiously, in the all-time series between the teams, each side has won as the home team only once.

Minnesota leads the league in goals scored with 45 on the year and has done so behind three top-ten goal scorers in Christian Ramìrez (19-1st), Daniel Mendes (9-tied 3rd) and Miguel Ibarra (8-tied 7th). The Scorpions are certainly no offensive slouch as they are second in the league with 41 goals in 2014, but the goal-scoring wealth has been distributed throughout the team. Only one player is in the individual top ten in goals; midfielder Rafael Castillo is tied with four others at 10th with seven goals.

The Scorpions have been slightly better defensively, conceding only 24 goals on the year - tied with New York for fewest in the league - and United is just behind with 25 goals allowed. With each team favoring more of a lone striker formation in recent weeks, this battle will likely be decided by which team is able to control the midfield.
