Portland too Much for Pats
October 22, 2014 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release
Regina, Saskatchewan - The Regina Pats (5-6-1-0) played their fourth game in five nights and fell 3-1 to the Portland Winterhawks (3-8-0-2) in a fast paced affair.
First Period
Despite plenty of action in the last few days, the Pats came out with jump against the Winterhawks. The Blue and White had some early scoring chances, but couldn't find the go-ahead goal. Portland took care of opening goal honours as Keegan Iverson turned around a quick centering feed for a powerplay marker. With the Pats on the powerplay, the Winterhawks broke down the ice with an opportunity to add to their lead. Skyler McKenzie tracked down a rebound off Tyler Brown and lifted in the first of his WHL career to make the tally 2-0 Winterhawks after the opening frame. Regina led the shots 13-11.
Second Period
Much like the opening period, the Pats came out of the room with plenty of speed. That attack created an early turnover which allowed Dryden Hunt to pull a quick spin move before rifling a gorgeous backhander to the top corner of the Portland net. Regina nearly tied the game when Colby Williams took a one-time feed and rattled the post. The Winterhawks found some iron of their own as Dominic Turgeon battled through a couple of Pats before flicking the puck off the bottom of the cross-bar and away from the net. Miles Koules followed it up by coming from behind the net and putting his own shot off the top of the bar. The score stuck at 2-1 through forty minutes with the Pats outshooting Portland 23-19.
Third Period
Pressure continued from the Queen City Kids as they pushed for a tying goal. The game took a twist when Portland's starting netminder, Brendan Burke, took a puck off the knee and was forced to leave the game. Recent acquisition Bolton Pouliot stepped between the pipes and made an excellent showing, turning away ten shots for the remaining sixteen minutes. Regina got into penalty trouble late in the contest and the Winterhawks sealed the victory with a late 5-on-3 powerplay marker from Chase De Leo to set the final score to a 3-1 count. The Pats outshot the Winterhawks 35-30 after sixty minutes.
Regina is back in action Friday in Swift Current. Listen to the action on 620 CKRM starting at 6:35 p.m. The Pats return home Saturday against the Broncos for Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
