IceHogs Top Bulldogs in Overtime

Hamilton, Ontario - The Rockford IceHogs (2-1-0-0) first encounter with the AHL's new overtime rules was a positive one, as they defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs (1-0-2-0) 2-1 on Saturday night at FirstOntario Cenre, thanks to Peter Regin's game-winning goal with 1:35 remaining in the extra frame.

Still looking for a goal after the first three minutes of overtime, the two teams resumed play three men-a-side, a scenario Rockford was able to use to their advantage to win the game.

Defenseman Kyle Cumiskey, loaned from the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday, picked off a Hamilton pass and used his speed and the increased open ice to go end-to-end where he was robbed by sprawling goaltender Mike Condon. After making the first save, Condon was helpless against the second wave of IceHogs attackers, as Alex Broadhurst was able to knock the rebound to a wide open Regin, who ended the game with his second goal and fourth point in the last two games.

The game was extended past regulation in large part to the play of IceHogs netminder Scott Darling, who made 34 saves to pick up his second win in as many starts. The netminder was tested early and often, as the Bulldogs held a 35-28 edge in shots on goal, most of which came in the game's early stages.

Over half of Darling's stops came in an opening period where Hamilton came out firing, outshooting the IceHogs 20-7. Despite the lopsided shot margin, the Bulldogs were only able to find the net once, when forward Christian Thomas opened the scoring 2:50 into the game. Thomas cashed in on a rebound created from a three-on-one rush to give Hamilton an early 1-0 lead.

The IceHogs found a quick equalizer as the second period started, as a crafty line rush led to Joakim Nordstrom's first goal of the season. Defensemen Klas Dahlbeck picked up a drop pass inside the blue line and fired a shot that handcuffed Condon. Nordstrom corraled the loose puck and knocked it home to tie the game at the 2:42 mark of the frame.

Nordstrom's tally was the last of regulation time, as the two teams traded chances in a scoreless third period but came up empty.

Rockford's penalty kill unit continued its torrid start to the 2014-15 season, killing off all three opportunities it faced. The IceHogs have yet to give up a goal when down a man, going a perfect 12-for-12 through three games.

The victory is the second straight for a Rockford club that is halfway through their longest road trip of the season. The IceHogs will take on the Toronto Marlies Sunday afternoon as they make their yearly trip to the Ricoh Coliseum. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Next Home Game: Saturday, Oct. 25 vs. Chicago Wolves, Puck drop is 7 p.m. The IceHogs will kick off the next installment of the Illinois Lottery Cup when the Wolves visit the BMO Harris Bank Center.
