Fayetteville Vanquishes Columbus in Shootout, 7-3 (1-0

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Fayetteville FireAntz defeated the Columbus Cottonmouths in a shootout 7-3 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for 10 attempts between the teams.

Fayetteville was boosted by Dustin Carlson, who turned in a shutout with 26 saves.

The FireAntz got the win thanks to a great game by Austin Daae, who had one goal and two assists. Daae scored 1:42 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fayetteville. Zach Carriveau picked up the assist.

Fayetteville forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and four majors for 50 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 41.0 minutes per game the FireAntz had been spending in the box. Fayetteville put 25 shots on net during the contest, more than the 17.0 it averages per game. The FireAntz bested their season scoring average. This season, Fayetteville averages 4.5 goals per contest.

Others who scored for Fayetteville included John Clewlow, who had two and Mike Kavanagh, Kyle McNeil, and Harry Mahesh, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Fayetteville were Corey Tamblyn, who had three and Michael Zannella, Darcy Vaillancourt, and Ryan Hand, who contributed one each.

Columbus forced the FireAntz goalie Carlson to work between the pipes, taking 48 shots.

The Cottonmouths were helped by Nick Curry, who had two goals. Curry scored the first of his two goals at 1:12 into the third period to make the score 5-1 Fayetteville. Louis Belisle provided the assist. Curry's next tally made the score 5-3 Fayetteville with 2:50 left in the third period. Columbus had gotten the advantage when Fayetteville's Kavanagh was sent off for cross checking. Belisle assisted on the tally. Columbus also got a goal from Casey Brugman as well. In addition, Columbus received assists from Kyle Johnson, who had one.

The FireAntz registered zero goals on one power play opportunities. Fayetteville ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Hand was ejected from the game. The Cottonmouths' starting goalie, Shannon Szabados, made 10 saves and finished with the otl before he was taken out in favor of Mikhail Fofanov, who stopped eight shots. Columbus totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and three majors and went 1-for-8 on the power play.
