San Antonio Scorpions News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN, TX(October 18, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions fell on the road for only the second time all year as Indy Eleven scored the lone goal Saturday night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
San Antonio dominated possession and took their chances on goal, but were unable to put any into the back of the net in the rare road defeat. The goal came in the 56' of the match when Los Angeles Galaxy loanee Charlie Rugg scored on a pass from Mike Ambersley.
The first half was a strongly defensive affair as each side found breaking down the opposition to be difficult. Giuseppe Gentile had the best opportunity for the Scorpions on a chance inside the box, but the difficult shot with a defender draped all over him went over the crossbar. Sergio Pena had the best take for the home team, but his long-range attempt was parried away by Saunders.
After the goal in the second half, Eric Hassli came on for Sainey Touray in the 61' and mere minutes later came close to another play-of-the-week candidate when he struck the ball truly on a volley attempt from inside the box, but unfortunately the shot went just high.
The Alamo City eleven had a golden opportunity in the 73' when Rafael Castillo earned a free kick right in the middle of the field 22 yards from the Indy goal. Castillo himself stepped up to put his free kick prowess to work and he powered a ball up and over the wall that dipped towards goal, but Eleven 'keeper Nicht was able to get down to make the save.
Late in second half stoppage time, the Scorpions had a series of corner kicks that resulted in a flurry of opportunities, but the finishing shot never came.
The Scorpions travel even farther north next week to face Minnesota United while the Eleven finish out the final two games of their inaugural NASL campaign on the road starting in against Ottawa against the Fury.
