Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back, as the road team skated to a 4-1 win over the St. John's IceCaps at the Mile One Centre on Saturday night. The win was the second in as many nights for the Penguins (2-2-0-0, 4 pts), while the IceCaps (1-2-2-0, 4 pts) saw their winless streak reach three games.
The Penguins grabbed their first regulation lead of the season just 2:59 into the game, as Scott Wilson banged home his first pro goal off of assists from Philip Samuelsson and Barry Goers.
Nick Drazenovic followed two minutes later with his first goal of the year to give the Pens a two-goal cushion after 20 minutes of play.
The Pens dominated the opening frame, outshooting the IceCaps 12-8 and getting the better of the scoring chances. But the game turned slightly in the second period.
J.C. Lipon, who earlier in the game dropped the gloves with Dominik Uher, netted his first goal of the season at 4:09 to get the home team on the board. But, despite holding an 11-4 shot advantage in the period, that was all of the offense the IceCaps would muster.
Bryan Rust became the first Penguins player to record more than one goal on the season when he beat Peter Budaj at 7:00 of the third period, and Zack Torquato capped the night with an empty net goal at 18:03 to secure the win for Wilkes-Barre.
Jeff Zatkoff picked up his second win of the season by turning aside 28 shots, while Budaj made 23 saves in the loss.
The Penguins finished the night 0-for-3 on the power play, but also denied St. John's on three man advantage opportunities.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finishes up its first road trip of the season on Tuesday night, when they visit the Albany Devils at 7:00pm. The Pens return home on Friday night, when they will host the Springfield Falcons at 7:05pm. Individual tickets for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena Box Office, online at TicketMaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
Penguins season tickets, including full season, 22-game, 12-game and 10-ticket flex vouchers, are available directly through the Penguins ticket offices at 570-208-7367.
