Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - Calder Brooks scored his first goal as a Chief as Spokane gave the undefeated Kelowna Rockets everything they could handle but fell short, losing 3-2 on Friday night. The game marked just the second regulation loss for Spokane this season.
Adam Helewka got the scoring underway in the 1st Period with a deflection goal off a Jason Fram shot at the 9:48 mark. Fram threw one on net from the right circle and Helewka got a stick on it, sharply altering the shot under Kelowna goaltender Jake Morrissey's left arm for his second goal of the year. Brooks earned his seventh assist of the year on the play.
Kelowna responded with a goal just after the Chiefs were able to kill off a long 5-on-3 penalty. Forward Austin Glover received a pass in the slot from Kris Schmidli and sneaked one under Chiefs goalie Tyson Verhelst's pads.
The Rockets took a hold of the game with two quick goals to begin the 2nd Period as Riley Stadel scored on the power play and captain Madison Bowey scored with a quick wrister to beat Verhelst over his left shoulder. The goals game at the 0:32 and 1:31 marks, respectively.
Spokane wouldn't fold from there, answering late in the 2nd Period as Helewka made a gritty play to maintain possession against the boards in Kelowna's zone and found Brooks streaking into the high slot. Brooks punched the puck past Morrissey for his first goal as a Chief and second goal of the season.
The Chiefs couldn't find a way past Morrissey in the 3rd Period despite out-shooting Kelowna 9-1 and the Rockets snuck away with the 3-2 win.
Verhelst, in his first start of the season, stopped 17 of 20 shots faced. Morrissey stopped 26 of 28 shots on his way to 1st-Star honors. The Chiefs were 0 for 5 on the power play and 5 for 6 on the power play.
Spokane turns back around to face the Everett Silvertips as it will be the 4th Annual Leinenkugel's Hocktoberfest at Spokane Arena on Saturday night. Festivities outside the arena, including Bavarian-themed food, music and entertainment, will begin at 4 p.m. T-shirts, steins and keychains will be available at the Chiefs Team Store all day and at the event.
Tickets for Hocktoberfest and all Chiefs home games are available in-person at the Chiefs' Ticket Office, over the phone (509) 535-PUCK or (800) 325-SEAT, via TicketsWest outlets and online at www.ticketswest.com.
