Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons fell to the Syracuse Crunch, 3-2, tonight at the War Memorial Arena in Syracuse.

Crunch forward Jonathan Drouin scored the game-winning goal at the 7:18 mark of the third period to push the Falcons to 1-1-0-0 on the season and 1-1-0-0 in the season series with the Crunch. The Crunch sit at 1-1-1-0.

Falcons netminder Anton Forsberg turned away 35 of 38 shots in defeat. Crunch netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy allowed only two goals on 28 shots. Springfield was unable to convert on two power play opportunities. The penalty kill unit was perfect, successfully shutting down all three Syracuse man-advantages.

The Crunch opened scoring, but the Falcons responded late in the period to end the first tied, 1-1. J.P. Cote passed the puck down to Jonathan Marchessault from the left point. Marchessault beat Forsberg with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle at the 8:44 mark. Dylan Blujus picked up a point for the secondary assist. The Falcons responded seven minutes later. Austin Madaisky fired a shot from the left point off a pass from Lukas Sedlak. The shot went intentionally wide and was redirected by Dana Tyrell from the right side of the crease. Tyrell placed the puck top shelf to tie the game, 1-1.

Both teams added one to their tally during the middle frame. Jaime Sifers took a shot from the blue line that was stopped by Vasilevskiy. Monardo picked up the puck as he skated in front of the goal and buried the rebound from the right side of the crease to give the Falcons the lead at the 3:53 mark. Madaisky earned his second point of the night on the go-ahead goal. The Crunch evened the score with 1:09 remaining in the second, just as the Falcons killed a slashing penalty on Andrew Cherniwchan. Cedric Paquette was able to control a cross-slot feed from Marchessault and beat Forsberg on the glove side. Cody Kunyk was credited with the secondary assist.

Drouin scored the only goal in the third period to lift Syracuse over Springfield, 3-2. Drouin forced a turnover from Denny Urban in the neutral zone and beat the Falcons defensemen across the blue line. Drouin netted the game winner from the bottom of the left circle.

The Springfield Falcons return to the MassMutual Center to face the Hershey Bears at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18 for the 2014-15 Home Opener presented by MGM Springfield.
